There have been fewer butterflies this summer than I ever remember. Climate change? Insecticides? Loss of habitat?
I was thrilled, however, to see a Monarch--the only one I've sighted this season. Not a good photo--from the car with my phone-- but so happy at least to have seen it.

I've seen a few and some in local photos.
Not having flowers that are main attractions for butterflies, I haven't spied many either. Note to self: plant some butterfly bushes next year!
We did seem to have more hummingbirds than usual this year though.
With your interest in painting, I thought I'd mention: I don't know if you've run across her, but Stephanie Sipp is a local artist who teaches nature journaling\drawing. Her classes have transitioned to online due to covid. She has taught at the Black Mountain Ctr for Art
I read that there were quite a few milkweed plants near the Black Mountain frisbee golf course\Dr. Wilson's Community garden and there were lots of monarch eggs
