Meditative Housekeeping

With temperatures in the high-seventies and bugs flying around, it was time to put up the screens. Which meant it was time to clean the windows.

On a beautiful day like Monday, it's a job I enjoy. A breeze came in through the open windows carrying the delightful fragrance of new-mown grass.

And then there's the view--all those trees in their feathery spring green against the blue-purple of the farther hills.

And the cheerful hum of carpenter bees.

And wasps, too, as they vie for nesting spots under our eaves.

What a day for window-washing!

We keep our screens on year-round. They're built in to the structure of the windows. Our windows badly need cleaning but I'm in no condition to do it. We'll call the people who do that for a living, although we haven't found anybody yet who does a respectable job. .

What a fun way to approach housekeeping. I'm off to hum along with dish washing...bubble bubble, toil and trouble...!

I can do the inside of our windows but most have old fashioned storm windows on the outside locked tight and painted shut. Dan does those with a long brush and hose. When we lived at the Lodge we were in a constant battle with borer bees who loved the old beams. Do you have them?

Marcia--We do but we call them carpenter bees. The holes are bad enough but then they lay eggs in them and pileated woodpecker gouge out the holes to get at the larvae.

YHour pictures and descriptions of springtime in the mountains made me so very homesick! Texas has its own beauty but the NC mountains will always be home. I am leading a group of retired professional women who want to record memoirs. It is rewarding. I plan to start reading NC writers, yours of course, with an eye toward recommending them to my books club. All best to you and yours (except those pesky carpenter bees!).

Good to hear from you, JC! Yes, this is a very special time in the mountains. But then, you have bluebonnets.

I quite like cleaning windows - and I'd like it even more with those views!
