I am appalled by the number of trees that have been cut down in our neighborhood in recent years, as older houses have been torn down and replaced with McMansions. Many of those new houses sit on bare lots, without a bit of shade from our fierce summer sun.
Both my neighbours have cleared their yards of trees. I admit I could see the sense of that when one of my trees suddenly fell down -- luckily, in the space between my house and the neighbour's, so the damage from the branches on our respective roofs was relatively minor. Still ... [shudders at the thought and casts a worried glance at my remaining trees, mentally measuring their height against the distance between them and my house ...] @ Sandra: it might be an insurance thing, all this tree-cutting. But I agree: those McMansions are bad enough, but on a treeless lot? Nyurg.

Yes indeed, how wonderful they are. And somehow that triggered my memory of going to Joyce Kilmer State Forest. Those trees were so big!
Ah, they are looking grand. They're still mostly bare here, but there are also signs.
