Josie and the New Chicks

I went with Meema to get chicks at Silvers Mill. They are very cute and fluffy.

And tiny, tiny. But they will grow up to be hens that lay eggs for us to eat. We bought 12--some for Grumpy and Meema and some for me and Mama and Daddy.

When we got back, I ran to get Grumpy because he is in charge of chicks.

We took them to the special chick house where they will stay till they get big enough to go in with the other chickens.

Meema came too but she is a little slow. It is because she is old and her knees hurt.

Grumpy put them in their new home but first he held some so I could touch them. They are very soft.

You have to be very gentle with baby chicks so they don't die. Meema says that the dark stripy one are Speckled Sussex. Speckled means with little spots all over but now they look stripy.

The fluffy yellow ones are Buff Orpingtons. They will be a browny-yellow when they are grown. Grumpy puts them in one by one and dips their little beaks in the water so they will know where to find it.

They also have food and a heat lamp to keep them warm.

After we took care of the chicks, I had to run around a little.

I like the redbud tree because I can pick the little flowers and throw them in the air like a celebration.

There is always something to celebrate, especially in Spring!

The title could be a new rock group. Well, maybe not. :)

She will enjoy watching them grow. Love her running off her excitement!

She writes so well for her age. :)
Daughter here in NH has 9 chicks that are growing fast. They reside under a lamp in a very large tub on their hearth for now. The hen house has no chickens at present. The ones they had they gave away because they needed the hen house to store cellar stuff while cellar was renovated (cement floor and sealed rock walls). Part of an energy efficiency grant they got. The granddaughters are handling the chicks a lot so they will be comfortable being handled as hens. Fun to see.

How delightful! The chicks are just lovely. I thought about getting some this Spring. I even bought the incubator ready, but so far I haven't done it. Your post today has made me want some. I kept chickens for ten years from 1990. Now I wonder if I am just too old to take care of them properly!

I learned something interesting even if I used to take care of chickens with my own grandmother... did I forget?
