Neil Gaiman Helps Me with the Pesto

Neil Gaiman's latest has been in my Kindle in Audible form for several weeks now. I've been hoarding it, anticipating the pleasure of listening to Mr. Gaiman read it to me.  And yesterday, the time had come.

The basil down in the box beds was overgrown and falling over of its own weight.  So I went in with the pruning shears and was ruthless -- harvesting a huge amount of basil and a lesser amount of parsley  (my pesto recipe calls for parsley too.)

It's a tedious job, going through and picking off just the good leaves... the kittehs didn't want to help. . . so I propped the Kindle up beside me and let Neil entertain me -- he's an excellent reader, by the way.
.
I soon realized that this job was going to take several hours and so Neil and I moved to the living room where I could put my feet up as I worked.

At last I was ready to make the pesto.  -- six batches of it. . .
The Cuisinart drowned out Neil's lovely British accent so I had to postpone hearing more of the story.

I ended up with 16 half pints of delicious pesto to put in the freezer and a bit over -- which adorned the fried pork chops and the potatoes  we had for supper.

Since I haven't finished the book, I'll say more about it another time -- but I can tell you that, half way through, I really, really like it. So did A.S. Byatt, according to her review.

(Merisi  suggested I add a link to the book on Amazon -- and HERE it is.)

Ah, pesto! At 4:30 this morning I was cooking pounded chicken breasts rolled around freshly made pesto. Now it's in the fridge. I'll slice it and have it for supper on this hot day.

Pesto! Yum! Our basil started out poorly and is now being eaten by something. We've never had that problem before in 20 years of basil growing & pesto making. I'm hoping it recovers enough for our pesto crew to make our usual 10 -12 pint jars by the end of the summer.

Smart AND YUM!
Were the kittehs hoping for catmint?

May I suggest to you to put a link to Amazon in your post? I'd click and order from there! xxx

There's a way one can set things up with Amazon so that, if a reader clicks through to a book on your blog and ends up purchasing it, you get a small kick-back ... Just sayin'. (^_^) --Mario R.

I read it cover to cover the first day it came out! I love it and since I also love Gaiman's voice, I might get the audible as well.

Vicki, your abundance of basil is so beautiful! Of course, parsley is quite fine, too.

I wonder if I could take the current politicos around your place, but I could definitely enjoy a garden like yours, and the kitten entertainers.

I know of this book, and think I might even have read/heard an interview with the author. Must go click a button or two to make a reservation at my library.

Oppressive heat continues here in NYC. Great time to make salads for supper.

I can smell it from here! :-)

Sadly I don't grow basil. I think it would need more heat than we get here usually, although not this week. It looks wonderful. You didn't mention the smell? I bet your house smelt wonderful. For me that smell means 'Italy'.
I already have that book in my wish list on Kindle. Can't wait to read your review of it.

What a crop of basil. I would need someone to read to me too if I had that many leaves to pick. Your jars full of pesto look so pretty. They will bring a taste of summer to winter days.

I read this a couple of weeks ago; it's the only book by Gaiman I've ever truly liked.

That's a fair amount of pesto!
