And There was Sunshine

As I headed out the door on the way to my doctor appointment (routine,) I couldn't help noticing the bright light in the sky--something not seen for over a week. There were shadows! And highlights! Could it be . . .sunshine!

But I didn't have time for a lot of pictures as I had to be in Mars Hill at 2:05. A text that morning had informed me that my new doctor was 'looking forward" to seeing me.

And I him. My previous doctors have retired or died or, in one case, moved on to teaching. So I was interested to meet the new kid and wondered just how young he would be.

Where are you from? he asked and I told him Florida, originally, but we'd been here since '75.

He laughed. Longer than I have, he said, and I was born here.

At almost 80, I'm getting used to doctors and dentists younger than my children. Ay, law!

Here in Braga, we had to find new doctors as our California coverage didn't cover anyone outside Kaiser's area. We liked our doctors at Kaiser, but we were delighted to find we like our Portuguese doctors as much. Both my husband and I already lost doctors to retirement, so we are rather happy our doctors here are young. We want to stick with them all the way to the final stretch in the road. I don't think any of them will be retiring before then.

Doctors text/email? In my experience, this hasn’t come to Canada yet. But I guess it was a reminder, and I do often get those by phone.

My primary care doctor of almost 30 years retired a couple of years ago, and I have been trying to replace her ever since. Finally have someone I like -- and yes, she is decades younger than I am. The only doctor I have left who is in my age range is my wonderful neurologist, and I'm so afraid he's going to retire. He's already working part-time.

And yes, the appearance of the sun in the sky is a blessing!

That one day of sunshine did wonders to my living through these "dark times" until Solstice...and then beyond. Yes, doctors (and nurses) are so much younger than we of a certain generation. Hopefully they make up for experience by being trained in latest procedures, but I'm sad to see that most M.D.'s still don't have much background in nutrition. This from the viewpoint of a cardiologist who wanted patients to change their lifestyle to be healthier.

Well, I'm 86 so you can just imagine. Now they're ages of my grandchildren, some of whom are a nurse and a Medical Physicist cancer specialist. Don't ask. I've no idea what he does.
