There is So Much I Would Like to Say . . .

. . . about the state of the world, the state of the country, and the machinations of the current regime to hold on to power no matter what . . .

. . .but I'll limit myself to one simple suggestion: get an absentee ballot and be prepared to hand deliver it--during early voting, if possible. No one knows what the state of the pandemic or the Postal Service will be like come November.

Br prepared for the most consequential vote of a lifetime.

To think it comes to this.

Yeah, it's more and more like living above the crazy house, isn't it?

All votes in Colorado are now done by mail. I hope that somehow they get counted no matter how slowly the postal service may become.

And we thought Obama's election had ushered in a new era. Now this. I am so terribly sad for my country.

Virginia now has no-excuse absentee voting and the state is encouraging everybody to vote that way.

I can only agree. I believe you are voting not only for the future of your own country but for the future of a decent and wholesome world - and this is pretty much the last chance we get.

By the way, Vicki, I loved your comment on my blog about 'homesickness for a place you've never been'. I think I have something of the same thing for your homestead. I have long had a fantasy of sitting on a porch someplace in my rocking chair and enjoying a garden, birds, sunrises and sunsets. I find I can do this wonderfully well through your posts and photos. It is often a great comfort in these unsettled times, as well as a joy.

You are welcome on my porch at any time, Andree.

Yes this country is in a terrible state, a downward spiral it looks like. I just heard tonight that in 17 days we went from 4 million Covid-19 cases to 5 million and in the last two weeks of July 100,000 children tested positive. The Italian newspapers are astonished that the US has no leadership and asked “don’t they care about their health? Don’t they care about their elders?” All the Italians stayed indoor as required (you remember, and singing from their balconies?) and all wore masks while here people fight not to wear one. New Zealand with a population of 4.5 million has reported no new cases in the last hundred days while Louisiana with a population of 4.6 million has 129,000 confirmed cases and 4,207 deaths – what is happening to the US?
I requested an absentee ballot since I am in Nashville, but with the Trumpist at the top of the USPS trying to slow down the mail I guess I’ll drive the 9.5 hour round-trip to Atlanta just to vote. This country was so proud and used to send teams to 3rd world countries to check their voting. Europe offered to send teams here to validate the voting, but of course it was refused. It will take years to gain back what we have lost.

Hi Ms. Lane,
I'm just discovering your blog and your writing. We have common relatives on my father's (Northcutt) side of the family. We have the same great grandparents. I live in Atlanta and just thought I'd connect because I'm doing some genealogy work.
