Eddie

Alas, our beautiful, surly, mysterious Eddie is gone. We found him yesterday morning under the bed, obviously very sick and almost comatose. I carried him to the back porch to clean him up and suddenly he rallied and scuttled off under the house.

But by the time John got to him, Eddie was dead.  He had been fine the day before and we suspect poison or snakebite.

Eddie was in no way a sweet cat but his was a distinctive personality.
I'll miss him.

Oh Vicki and John, I am so sorry for your loss. Eddie had so much personality, it shone through in the photographs and stories you posted about him. I'll miss him.

Be happy in cat heaven, Eddie.

Sorry to hear such tragic news, Vicki. Sweet natured or not, Eddie was still a family member, and it's bound to hurt.

I love cats, but somehow a cat who is
"in no way a sweet cat" is somehow more CAT than if he had been otherwise.
I'm sorry for the shocking nature of his demise, but I have come to value the rapid exit.

Blessings on cat Eddie and his family of people who will remember him. Another friend has been missing a cat that regularly came home but hasn't this time...not knowing what happened to her. Eddie seemed to be a person in his own right. Sorry for your loss.

I feel your pain, Vicky. I still grieve over my Himalayan, Lexus, who was gorgeous and such a comfort to me. She developed intestinal cancer and we reached the day that I had to let her go. That was six years ago and I'm tearing up right now. Sending you a cyber hug.

I think you did a post on snakes one time , Vicki, a long while back, but you've never really mentioned whether or not you are much bothered by snakes that can cause trouble: copperheads, rattlers....just curious when you mentioned "snakebite" as a possible element in the mysterious cause of Eddie's demise. Do you have to be watchful in Paradise? Or are you "protected" by the presence of black snakes, as we are?

I am so sorry. Eddie was one of a kind, and he had a wonderful life with you.

Many thanks for all the kind words. To answer Elora's question about snakes -- I've seen copperheads on our property maybe three times in thirty-some years -- most recently about three years ago in the garden. And we do have black snakes that are supposed to keep other snakes away.
But I'm always aware that there may be copperheads around. Even so, I prefer to let the dogs and cats run free. While Eddie spent at least half of his time indoors, I suspect he would have become very unhappy and frustrated if he'd not been allowed out. A short life and a merry one...

I'm really sorry for your loss, Vicki.

When my first Golden Retriever died, a friend gave me a card that began:

"They do not go quietly,
These pets that share our lives...."

I always think of that in times like this. It's a testament to their personalities and spirit that they remain with us through the rest of their lives.

Oh, poor thing!

Ooops. Obvious I meant "the rest of OUR lives."

I'm so sorry for your loss. We almost lost our cat to a snakebite many years ago and finally did lose him to an strange accident outdoors about a year ago. He had 14 years with us and I'm absolutely sure if he could have traded more 'inside only' years for his possibly fewer 'inside/outside' years, he would have said no thank you. Eddie sounds like a true CAT and I know you'll miss him. Thanks for sharing his pictures with all of us over the years.

I am so sorry, Vicki, to hear of your loss. I've lost my beloved dog, Rocky and now my cat, Tiger, has become an inside cat. She hates to go out, seems afraid. Especially when living alone, a pet becomes even more a part of our lives. I'm glad the passing was fairly rapid.
He was a gorgeous cat.

I personally prefer cats that are surly, cantankerous, and I admire their distinctive personalities. I think that is their true identity and nature. I'm happy Eddie was true to himself and I'm sorry he is gone too soon.

I know that for the next several weeks you will look at his favorite sunning spots and be surprised to find he isn't there. And you will pause again for a moment and miss him again.

Godspeed, dear Eddie.

I'm so very sorry for your loss of Eddie. Mysterious creatures, most of them, and talk about individuality, they have it in spades...

Tammy said...

Oh Vicki no! I'm a few days behind on blogs, and just read this this morning. I'm so sorry to hear that Eddie is gone. Chaco wants to be just like him (although I've told him he maybe shouldn't be 'just' like him...) when he 'grows up'. So hard to lose them, characters that they are. I lost my Tibby cat last week, she was an outdoor kitty and was 14 but I still find myself looking for her every time I walk out the door. Again...so very sorry.
