Ethan's Birthday

Ethan, my elder son, turns thirty five today. Lord, where does the time go? Thirty four years ago he was just learning to walk and we were at the top of the mountain, enjoying a summer day. He was the most cheerful child and a lot of the personality of the young Laurel in Old Wounds derives from him.

Thirty-three years ago and we were celebrating his second birthday under the shed of the barn we were camping in. Clifford and Louise, our neighbors down the hill, had come up for the do. There was cake and there were balloons

Ethan had a swing in the barn, right next to the kitchen area. Seems like yesterday -- and it seems like something I maybe just dreamed.

So we celebrate again with a family dinner tonight. There will be birthday presents with riddles to guess (we play the same game Elizabeth and her family did at Christmas in Dark Season) -- and I'm off to make a chocolate pound cake and count my blessings.

Happy Birthday to Ethan from 'the other side of the mountain'.

Yes, when I look at my sons, both grown men now (40 and 37) I am simply amazed. Where o where did the time go .......

And who is that young gal with the long braid? ;-) I enjoyed seeing the old photos. Everytime I see the white edged, slighty grainy pictures from that time period, I have a bout of nostalgia. Hope you have a great party!

Reminds me of the song from "Fiddler on the Roof"--Where are you going my little one, little one? Where are you going my baby, my own? Turn around and you're two, turn around and you're four, turn around and you're a young girl going out of the door. It continues until she has "babes of her own." And then the grandchildren grow even faster. Happy birthday to Ethan.
