Dinner Table Conversation

Claui is away at the beach and Justin ate with us last night. We were having open-faced lamb burgers on ciabatta, covered with a very garlicky tzatziki  sauce and we were talking about what a foodie place Asheville has become -- new restaurants popping up all the time with excellent food of every ethnicity.

And, as always, we launched into the reasons we almost never go out to eat at night: Asheville's a good forty-five minutes away; driving back if you've had some wine could be a problem; we eat really well at home and the places we might be interested in trying for something different are pretty expensive . . .

Finally Justin kinda summed it up. "I'm happy to eat at home no matter what. But, if Obama called up and said, 'Hey, Justin, this is Barack. Michelle and I are in town and would like to take you and Claui to dinner. On us.' I'd be like 'Well, okay. What's the dress code? Do I have to wear a suit?' and he'd be, 'No, no, just casual. I was thinking of 12 Bones . . .' and I'd be, 'You know, Barack, I like 12 Bones a lot but could we up the ante a little?"

For the record, Mr. President (just in case you happen to read this post,) 12 Bones would suit me fine.  Or, hey, I could fix supper here.  The garden's doing great right now -- I think Michelle would like it, It's four wheel drive up to the house but we could meet you guys down at the barn. Dress for the country -- there are several friendly dogs -- like us, all yellow dog Democrats at heart..

With all the things you cook, I can't imagine why you would ever go out to eat!

Wonderful. So many conversations with newcomers and old around Asheville are about the restaurants. Have you tried...what's the scoop, etc? I wish I had the income and time to try them all...because they surely do sound delightful, and I do return to my favorites sometimes...went to India Garden just last week!

I hit India Garden for lunch or the rare occasion that I have to be in Asheville for a doctor's appointment. Great buffet!

Vicki, I enjoyed this dinner table conversation. Once upon a time, I used to visit New York restaurants much, much more frequently than is now the case. Sometimes either lunch or dinner came along with entertaining business clients long ago. As far as dining out with friends, once upon a time NYC was no where near as expensive a place as it has now become.

Nowadays, I do meet friends for lunch, but definitely find that I don't mind my own cooking one little bit.

(I note that the conversation about having the President and First Lady over for supper did not mention the presence of ... the kittehs. Must have been an oversight. Surely, they would provide the cabaret.)

We're much the same and rarely go to Asheville for dinner. But we often go there for lunch. Unfortunately we have some favorites and tend to go there rather than trying some of the newer places. Yep, I would definitely go there with the Obamas. Try to wrangle an invitation for us if you get one.

The Obama's would jump at the chance to dine at your home Vicki. I'm sure no restaurant in Asheville could match the ambiance and savory goodies in an your casual, comfortable home. I am sure Michelle would want to stay over and help you weed and pick some purple beans. What I like about the Obamas is their feet touch the ground.

We perfectly relate to your second paragraph. We eat well at home and it it is difficult to find a good place to eat in Toulouse or around. But we are still trying once in a while to have a couple of addresses where and bring visitors when they come for more than a couple of days.

Nice to go out, of course: soak up the atmosphere etc. but if they can't make it better than you can yourself, then might as well stay home. Your food always looks good and you know how fresh it is. We went to The Chop House once and Larry was seriously sick afterwards.

Ps my favourite over there is Cracker Barrel. Nice home cooking there. Nearest thing to it, anyway.

I love tzatziki. And last time I was in Asheville with my mom, we had trouble picking out just one place to have dinner at because there were some many good ones. We ended up at Chestnut (I think) and it was delicious!
