A Challenge

So, I'm back home (just barely) and I've heard from Herself who feels that while Miss Birdie's story is "magnificent," there are other elements that throw the story out of balance. There is more work to be done. We will have a phone conversation on Thursday.

To me, this is good news. I have an editor who wants to wring the best out of me rather than just accepting something that's 'good enough.' There are lots of editors out there, so I hear, who don't actually edit -- just say yea or nay. Herself is not one of these. On the contrary.

I have every confidence that when we're done, this book will be a hundred percent better than the book I sent her. And you faithful readers, waiting patiently (or not), will be the beneficiaries of our work.

"Aren't you disappointed?" someone asked.

Not really. It feels like a second chance.

OK, while I am (selfishly)disappointed that she didn't just say, "Publish NOW", I admire your attitude and I do know that you know best. I realize that she has had a lot of input on your previous books, and they all turned out wonderfully. So, I'll be patient a bit longer. (I'm also glad she said it was magnificent.) After it is published, I think it would be fascinating to know what she felt should be changed, deleted, added, etc.

I agree with you, Vicki, that this is good news - although selfishly, I would also have liked the "Publish NOW" as Sue P. stated! And Herself did say it was "magnificent"!

Yes, you are lucky to have an editor who pushes to get the very best out of you. In the long run it will pay off!Glad you had a great time in Alabama and made it back to Paradise safely.

I'm so glad you all understand! Believe me -- I'd love it if it were done and at the printers but I also know that it can be improved and that past experience shows that Herself will nudge and suggest till I do what should have been done in the first place.

Sue P. -- I'll be happy to tell people privately what was changed. I can't do it here because of giving away the plot of the published book. For example, ART'S BLOOD originally had a different murderer and Herself made me see that I'd made the wrong choice. I've told lots of folks who the original villain was but couldn't do it here in case someone who hadn't read ART'S BLOOD was reading my post.

I'm with the others--it would have been great if it was already on the way to the publishers!;-) However--what is even better than a good Miss Birdie book? A great Miss Birdie book. I really admire you for your attitude, and that you are able to step back and realize that a different prespective can add to your work of art, instead of taking away from it. Once I read the book, I would love to hear what Herself wanted changed. :-) Thanks for keeping us updated!

Hi-
Just came across your blog and I'm so glad I did. I have ordered up your first book and can't wait to get it after reading the description at Amazon. I am at work on my novel and find such comfort in locating others doing the same.
A new author to read. Joy!

Hi Vicki! Welcome Home! I too love your attitude regarding your book and your editor and think you are a lucky woman to have someone who truly does care about your work. My feelings on this are that because of her, and your unique talent, you'll be here for the long haul and that ain't nuthin' but grand!!!

Hey, Tammy, as I told Sue, I'll figure out some way you all can find out about the differences. And yeah, a different perspective is really, really important and helpful.

Kris, Welcome to the blog! Where are you located?

And Kaye -- we missed you last weekend. It was really a fun time as I'm sure Mary Jane has told you.
