Anticipation . . .

Spent Monday breaking up Christmas--all the ornaments off the tree and stored away, popcorn-cranberry chain deconstructed and ready to feed wildlife, red and green pillow covers in wash, random holiday pictures and tchotchkes rounded up and put away. Out with the red and green, in with yellow and blue. (Except for the amaryllis which continues to tease me by opening v e r y slowly.)

It's not quite done--there are quilts and pictures to switch around and odds and ends to put in the two remaining shelves of the corner cabinet not occupied by the Castle People.

All the fairy lights on the bookcases, stairs, front windows, and mantel will stay up through January. We need all the light there is.

It's quite a chore to deconstruct the holiday decor. I know I did it on the 30th. I left out snowflakes and placed them in the windows. Lights outside and candles in the windows will stay up for awhile here too.

Yes to keeping lights aglow through January.

Good idea, I echo others to your plan to keep on adding cheerful lights to January.

I bought three amaryllis bulbs this time, and they are still rewarding us with gorgeous flowers. I wish they would rebloom. I hate throwing away those big bulbs. I have to remind Jerry to take down the door wreath.

Just a reply to Sandra Parshall: my mother kept an amaryllis going for at least two years, possibly more. There are several sets of instructions to be found online, but it basically comes down to letting the bulb go dormant, keep it in a cool place, then bring the pot back out about a month and a half before you hope it will bloom again. Sometimes, it won't bloom again, but it's worth trying.

JJM -- I've tried letting the leaves die back naturally to return energy to the bulb, but I haven't had any luck with reblooming. We have so many houseplants as it is that keeping three amaryllis after they bloom will present a challenge. Right now only one of my 13 orchids is blooming, but they all need light and care and SPACE while they rest. It's a dilemma.
