Cranky Monday -- Only Two . . .

Only two of the many spelling/usage errors that I've noticed recently.

One is Woah! used in the sense of Stop! or Hold on there!  Shouldn't it be Whoa! as said to stop a horse?

The other is Here, here! used to signify agreement.  This is awfully common but I looked it up to be sure that I was correct in believing it should be Hear! Hear!

I was. It derives from Hear him! Hear him! -- used in approval during a speech. Kinda like spontaneous Amen's during a sermon.

What about you? Are there any annoying bits of ill-used language that make you grit your teeth or reach for a red pencil?

No, I'll have to "make due" with your examples.

I dislike "for sell" on items for sale.

"I seen" gets to me. As does "brung".

The multi-mis-use of two, too, and to are my unfavorites. Unless it's you're doing your worst on conjunctions. Sigh. I often misspell, (really as mistakes) and like to use a "wh" for "whow" but it is no longer allowed with all the spell correction helpers. Wow. Mundane.

Deep seated vs deep seeded??

Oh Vicki, I'm afraid I am not well versed as I should be. As long as I know what is meant, I am fine. xx

I put my red pencil away long ago. There are simply far too many of these errors to let them be of concern. You have to admit that some of them are great fodder for late-night television hosts.

"Different than" used to really bug me! I had always used "different from." It's used so often now that I looked it up and both are considered correct used in the proper context. It still sounds strange to me much of the time.

Just saw: 'Very kind jester' as a comment on a post about a cafe giving away free leftover food at the end of each day. Hilarious.

"Reflect back" - redundant!

'Than' for 'then,' but more often 'then' for 'than'...

Misuse of there, their, and they're. Drives me crazy. Also use of their as a gender neutral singular, though it see,s to be becoming acceptated useage.

I can't stand the interspersing at random of the word LIKE. Drives me nutz. Mostly young people. Did it start with the "valley girl" phenom?
