A Gathering of Cousins

Yesterday nieces and nephews and a great niece came from Tampa and Charlottesville and Asheville for a quick reunion and to meet the newest member of the clan.

There was barbecue and food in plenty and much talking and laughing on the front porch. The farm has been a special place for these cousins since they were young.

Lily and Ali fell in love with each other when she was here several years ago and there's still a special something between them.

It's a wonderful thing to see the gang together.

Before they all arrived at noon, I made a lemon pound cake and when I went into the kitchen to take it out of the oven, the rich sweet smell and the comfortable warmth suddenly transported me back to my grandmother's kitchen sixty-odd years ago and I wallowed in nostalgia.

And then I realized, with a bit of a shock -- dang! -- now I'm the grandmother!

How wonderful to have that scent memory from your past, and to know you're part of the chain of passing it into the future! It looks delicious!

And you are finding that being the grandmother is a fine place to be. How wonderful that you have created such a special place for those cousins. Time and fellowship they will reflect upon for years to come. Such memories are priceless. Fills me with hope for the future in these troubled times.

Family is why we learn to bake cakes, can't live without either one, xx

What a fun time. I know Vicki that Grand Ma Grand Pa thing but we got into the Great Grand 7 years ago and it was a shocker. However some the tiny little new great grand daughter was a prize beyond discription. She is still known to me as Little Bit and I am know as cowboy grandpa.

Yes. You are the grandma, and now you're making the memories. I grew up with lots of cousins and grandparents and aunts and uncles nearby. Your family is lucky to have this rich family life with you at the hub!

Yes, it's quite a thought, isn't it. I still can't get used to being the grandmother person in the family. Josie has had a great welcome!

It certainly looked like y’all had a great time. Now you are the one to make memories for the younguns. Isn’t it funny that we always had older family members than us and now comes the realization that we are the elders? Hum.
That lemon pound cake looks delicious. Smells do take us back. My grandmother (and my mother) never baked but I remember the smell of the French bakery where she took me to buy little cakes on Sundays.
