More Birdwatching

All of these were taken on Tuesday  -- and through a somewhat cloudy double-paned window, hence the blurriness..

I especially love watching the crows -- they perch high in the big tree at the foot of our yard and keep a lookout. Only rarely do they came near the house.

Titmice are sweet looking with their soft black eyes...

Crow remains aloof...

Nuthatches usually are sleek and dapper dudes -- but this one's puffed up due to the cold -- we actually had a bit of snow on Tuesday though it quickly disappeared...

One crow, two crow -- another attempted murder (snicker) ...

Titmouse's rusty waistcoat is very fine looking...

I think the crows may be watching me...

I tend to just call them all sparrows  (there are 25 different sorts in my book of eastern birds) but I think this is a White-Throated Sparrow.

There are only two sorts of crow -- American Crow and and Fish Crow, which is almost identical but slightly smaller. They are mainly identified bu their vocalizations -- but a young American Crow may sound like a Fish Crow. Which do you suppose this is?

(I know we have lots of warblers around but have never been able properly to identify them. My bird book lists about forty different warblers.... Plus there's a page called 'Confusing Fall Warblers. I'm just not meant to be a serious birder, I'm afraid.)

A chickadee  (Carolina or Black-Capped -- I can't tell) waits for his turn at the feeder...

The crows just wait...

A mourning dove keeping her feet warm . . .

The picture I wish I gotten: John was on his way to town and down near the river he saw a Bald Eagle dining on possum roadkill . . . he didn't have time to get a picture. . . .

And one last crow...

Wow lots of crows who are among the smartest of the bird kingdom or so I have read. Amazing crew of different birds around your place. I am not the best when it comes to identifying -- I just love to see them, observe their behavior and hear their different calls. wonderful photos. -- barbara

I'm lousy at identifying all the different kinds of birds, I would just like to see more of them in my yard! Yours are great!

Once we put up several birdfeeders (which we keep filled year round,)I bought a bird identification book so I could recognize some of the customers. Now I have several bird books some with photos, some with drawings. Oddly, I find the drawings are more helpful ... though nothing's going to help with those warblers.

Sometimes it's just great to say "bird" and appreciate it for being all the things that means, without it's family and order classification names!

Don't have the verity out here in San Diego County so far as small birds at feeders, mostly finches and sparrows. Had to get rid of the feeders because it attracted rats. We keep a hummingbird feeder that I love. Only get Annas but what fun to watch.
We get tit mouses that build wonderful nest in the melaleucas . Also get house wrens. Plan to put up bird houses for them.
