Mackeral Sky

Mackerel sky, mackerel sky,
Never long wet, never long dry.

That's what we had Friday morning -- a sky filled with rows of cirrocumulus or small altocumulus clouds, named for its resemblance to a mackeral's skin and usually indicating a change of weather.
The temperatures climbed into the forties, icicles were hurtling to thhe ground, and the sun shone all day. But the sky and the online weather forecast are predicting more snow on the way.
And on the north side, which includes our driveway, the snow hasn't melted. And it's not even winter yet.

We had snow again this morning and tonight...fog. My friend said we are expected to have a snow storm next Tuesday! Oh this is too early. I will have winter burn out before Christmas!!

Vicki, all the photos are beautiful. My favorite is the ice encrusted rose twig with the rose petal partially embedded in it.

Maybe when winter actually does arrive, your weather will warm up a bit. The weather is so strange now, who knows? It was 57 ( !!! ) here today, but snow is forcast for next Wednesday with a high of 27. Insane!

Such very beautiful photos, I have no idea of what it means to be so cold. Keep warm and enjoy the views from your windows.

That second photograph is really unusual. We've still got some snow lingering. Milder over the weekend and a second wave of Winter next week!

How sad does that rose look - as though it was trying to huddle away from the wind? That's what we'll be trying to do here today. :)

Ir seems like Mother Nature is playing a joke on us, trying to make us believe it's late January, early February. I don't ever remember so much snow this early.

Your photos are outstanding Vicki. You should frame the one of the skies.

Still some snow around here in the shaded areas, and the forecast doesn't look good at all. More cold, snow, winds ... yes, late January/early February weather and it's only December! Scary!!

Love your fishy foto! And yes, there'll be some changes comin'! Temperatures sliding back down again...:-((

In the Midwest, they call it a "buttermilk" sky. Whatever, it always signals a weather change!

Vicki, I think you have a secondary career as a photographer. The cloud photo is spectacular. But keep writing those books.

I wish I had a hanging on rose like that. Pretty, pretty.

No snow or icicles here... yet. They are predicting that kind of weather to usher in our annual party. Time will tell.

Have a wonderful weekend.

I love the sky photo Vicki. You never know what beautiful scene the sky will unroll for you and it's constantly changing. Have a great weekend.

When does your winter start, Vicki?
The mackerel sky is beautiful. Watch out for those icicles.

You have many stunning pictures with snow. I wish it would snow here a little. I heard on the weather channel that we may get flurries tomorrow. I am planning to stay indoor with my camera so I can jump outside at the first snow fall, but it is still in the 40s. Your new book sounds intriguing. I hope you’ll get a “clear’ to go ahead with it.

Brrr, Brrr. Hate winter and it's not here yet is right. Love the sky pics. I could stare at clouds all day and see something beautiful no matter which way you look.

What a fabulous sky. I'm very fond of them - in fact I posted one back in October. It looks pretty cold out your way though!

"Mackerel sky"
fr: "nuages moutonneux"

How strange the language is !
It's obvious for French people to see this kind of sky like the fleece of a sheep!
No one could imagine the skin of a mackerel floating in the air!

Such differents ways of thinking in different countries...

Beautiful picture of the fragility of the rose...

And thank you very much for your translations!

What a wonderful cloud picture. Since I moved here, I've become fascinated by clouds. In Los Angeles, there were next to none.

Oh, that last stubborn rose!

"Icicles hurting to the groung" - words to remember!

But the rose may speak the loudest about our early cold winter.
