Not Feeling the Fourth

I'm finding little to celebrate as the Supreme Court chips away at hard won freedoms and the GOP continues in thrall to a criminal and con-man.

If the 'Originalists' on the court have their way, they will take us back to the USA of the original constitution--where only white property owners have the vote, where Black people are enslaved (by poverty and discrimination,) where women are not valued above a fertilized egg, where the LGBTQ's of any sort are shoved back into the closet, where there's no such thing as climate change or pollution, where the social safety net is left to religious groups, and business, holy business runs the show.

As more and more is revealed about the wealthy folks who've befriended and enriched various of the Supremes, I think it's time that, like NASCAR drivers, they wore patches naming their sponsors on those solemn black robes.

Nope, no flag waving today. I'm embarrassed by my country.

It's perplexing and saddening. So sorry to see this happening.

Grim!
You are not the only country where everything is flushed down the river (can we say such a thing?). We arecexperiencing weird events in France too. We saw the black smoke in the sky from our home.

The swing toward the right in many countries is troubling. And the many immigrants fleeing climate change and oppressive governments makes the problem worse.

I completely agree with you.

And the two top items in the news on July 4 are a mass shooting in Philadelphia and the indicted trump's big lead in the republican primaries. I'm starting to hate this country.

I think there are many who feel as you do. Never give up my friend, never go backward. All minorities need and deserve people like you fighting for them. Bernie xx

Indeed they should have various shoulder patches. Another FB posting had the 6 with kangaroo bodies and heads. This is so frustrating. I used to want to stay away from politics, because after all, it is full of liers and cheats because of all the empty promises. Now I'm not sure. Our voices of reason need to be heard. Perservere!

You make some very good points. It is disturbing what conservative majority on Supreme Court has done. But in the news there are cases being presented like the one from Jews and liberal Christians who say their religious freedoms are being denied by anti abortion laws. There are those saying their free speech is being denied by book bannings. There is hope.

I know good people who have left the US or are preparing to leave because they don't feel safe here anymore. Did you see Kelli Stanley's post a few days ago? She and her partner are preparing to move to Great Britain.

Totally agree. Thirteen years since Citizens United and 10 since the Roberts Court struck down the Voting Rights Act, and our country feels less free every day. What ever happened to the GOP's 'less government' goal? Florida is a perfect, frightening, example with DeSantis crowing about 'freedom' and doing everything he possibly can (along with his hand-picked minions in the legislature and key government positions) to limit and/or erase those very freedoms. If I read anything where he says "woke" again - and he does about every other sentence - I think I'll scream.

I hate that I feel today is a day of sadness, not celebration...
