What?

As you may or may not know, I received a notification for FB back in, I think, February that my account was suspended for 180 days because of what they said was my Instagram account. But it wasn't my account (I have one that I never use) and I was already so annoyed with Zuckerberg and the other techies truckling to the Golden Grifter, that I decided not to pursue getting unsuspended.  And it was fine. Then yesterday I received the following email:

Page Published

Hello,

After reviewing your appeal, your Page Vicki Lane Mysteries has been published. That means it can now be viewed publicly.

The Facebook Team

But . .. .I never did an appeal. Nada.  I can only assume this is AI at work--and be happy I wasn't marked for deportation through an administrative error.

I found I did fine without FB but realized that there were folks I wondered about  and missed chatting with. Plus as a source of local news, FB is quite useful.

So I'm back. Until something I post triggers a suspicious logarithm.

I've continued daily posts on my blog vickilanemysteries.blogspot.com --you can check out Josie's 8th birthday party there, and there's a visit from Miss Birdie. Plus the usual flowers, books, critters, etc., etc., etc.

Strange Day

First my Facebook account was suspended. The reason given had to do with an Instagram account--that I don't believe is mine. I signed up for IG years ago but haven't used it since.

I'm suspecting a hack and will stay off FB till things become clearer. While I'll miss being in touch with friends, I think it will be a good thing to break the tie, at least for a while.

Then our power went off for hours. No biggie--I sketched and listened to Stephen Fry reading P.G. Wodehouse. It was a pleasant way to spend a cold, drizzly day.

I haven't yet decided if I'll continue this blog on a daily basis. It began as a way to reach readers and has become, really, a sort of online journal. Most of the engagement has come from FB with a handful of folks who read the blog online rather than FB.

 We'll see

FB Outage, Oh No!

Yesterday's massive Facebook outage got me. as it did so many others. Repeated attempts to log in, only to be told it was the wrong password and then, when I tried to make a new password, to be told an error occurred--frustrating to say the least. I quit trying, as I had housework to do.

So. while dealing with dishes and laundry and dusting and such, I had time to think. How important is FB to me anyway?

I joined, at the behest of my publisher, years ago. But now that I don't have a new or recent book to push, why stay?

Well, for one thing, I have a number of FB friends that I would miss hearing from. Some I've never met in person but they are important to me. For another, I get a fair amount of news and information of local interest.  And there's always someone to answer questions about local matters. Plus, it's a great resource if a dog goes missing. Not to mention all the pretty pictures of places I'll never go.

Ever since Covid, I've gotten quite used to socializing online, rather than in person. Even without the risk of Covid, online is easier, what with my increasing deafness and limited mobility.

Still, (are you listening, Zuckerberg?) if suddenly FB became a pay-to-play site, I'd quit. I figure all the ads that FB shows me are keeping Mr. Z in running shoes and yachts.

This blog--also begun at the behest of my publisher--will probably continue for the foreseeable future. I was always rubbish at keeping a journal, but the blog has become a habit--and a handy way of looking up what was going on in my life on a particular date.

If at some time in the future you can't find me on FB, look for my blog. The blog abides.

The Monkey Dilemma

Scrolling through Facebook recently, I came across a video of an Asian woman feeding two little monkeys, both in diapers and fancy little outfits. While I've never been a particular fan of monkeys (once my family babysat a monkey for a week or so and he was pretty unpleasant), something about this video caught my attention and I watched it all the way through.

The little monkeys were very calm and obedient, almost too much so. And it was fascinating to see how human they were. Both sucked their thumbs while they were waiting for the food, which their (self-described 'mom') took her time preparing.

In the week or so that followed, I watched a few more--'Mom' bathing the monkeys, more feeding, etc. Then suddenly, almost every other post in my FB feed was monkeys--different ones, some with cute human "sister," some riding on the back of a motor scooter, going shopping, sleeping . . .

And the monkeys were getting younger and younger; newborn, even.

Wait a minute! I thought. Where are these babies coming from? Why aren't they with their real mothers?

I had asked this question in the comments early on but had never received an answer. (There were thousands of comments, attesting to the popularity of these monkeyshines.)

Finally, I realized that the best thing for me to do was to block all monkey-related feeds, rather than continue to somehow support this apparent exploitation of baby monkeys.

Monkey off my back.

She Called Me Ignorant . . .

After the shooting at the Texas church, I was reading a friend's Facebook post about the inevitable 'prayers and wishes' that follow such events (and the inevitable failure to do anything more concrete) and I made a comment which elicited a fervent response from someone I'll call Nice Lady. I've copied the entire string of comments because I found it interesting and, ultimately, heartening the way it played out.

Me: May God be with them, the president tweeted. One wonders where God was during the shootings in the church.

Nice Lady: God said men would become more evil, that perilous times would come! We don’t always understand why things happen I don’t understand but I know God is good and his word will be fulfilled! No man can stop it! Jesus warned us of this hour! Jesus is coming soon! More evil is going to come upon this earth like Jesus said. If we love him and stay close to him we have nothing to fear! They’ll be more mass shootings because men are so wicked and they have no conscience! They are like demons walking this earth! Gun control cannot stop this there’s so many guns in the hands of lunatics.

Me: So would you say the folks in the church loved and stayed close to God?

Nice Lady: hon I’m not sure what you mean. But people in other countries are being killed, beheaded for their love for Christ! Those precious people didn’t deserve to die like they did but Jesus didn’t say we wouldn’t suffer for him. He said the world hated him so if we love him the world ( evil people ) would hate us too!. We just need to trust him and walk close to him! God bless!

Me: I don't believe these people died because of their love for Jesus. They were the unfortunate victims of a deranged individual who was set off by a family dispute. You have your belief and your faith. Blessings to you -- I just don't see it that way.
(Trying to disengage politely . . .)

Nice Lady: I didn’t mean that. I can see you don’t understand what I’m talking about. Yes some crazy guy shot those people but it wasn’t Gods fault! I believe in the Bible. Maybe you should read it !

Me: Why do you assume I haven't read the Bible? I have. And while I think it contains some beautiful words and some wise philosophy, I do not believe that it is the "Word of God."

Nice Lady:  (I'm paraphrasing this from memory because when I went back a day later, she'd removed this particular comment.) Then you are ignorant. And you won't go to heaven and I hate to think about where you will go

Okay, I don't mind being told I'm going to hell but being called ignorant is like a bloody slap in the face. It really annoyed me for not only have I read the Bible, I've read a lot of scholarly works on the Bible. I know about the various translations and the various sources and the inconsistencies and errors. But life isn't long enough to get into it with a true believer so I didn't. Plus I try hard not to get angry on Facebook. Just walk away . . . But she wasn't done.

Nice Lady: I’ll be praying for you Vicki! Gods word has been proven over and over to be true! I pray your eyes are opened to the truth!

Me: Thank you. And I wish you all the best.

Note my restraint. And then notice the shift in her tone.

Nice Lady: I’m sorry for calling you ignorant. That wasn’t right! I wish you the best always too.
❤️

Wow! I do admire someone who can apologize! And with little hearts.

Thank you.

Nice Lady: Have a nice thanksgiving ! ❤️💕

Me: And you too!

Kinda amazing. I went from being extremely pissed off and really wanting to use all the bad words at my command to feeling like there could be hope for people with different points of view to communicate. Neither of us swayed the other but our perceptions of each other changed. A small victory for civility.

The Persecuted and the Persecutors

Hoorah! A Very Nice Guy at North End Computers (Weaverville, NC) brought my laptop back to life -- while I waited. He says something probably shorted out and it could happen again but, for the moment, here I am.

I personally suspect that the short may have been due to all the vitriol that was flowing on a particular page on Facebook, shortly before  the laptop went black. I was horrified and fascinated at the same time -- it was like watching a mob gather with pitchforks and torches.

It happened like this. There's a FB group for folks from the Appalachians. Someone invited me to join several years ago and though I'm "not from here," as they say,  I'm interested in the stories about the old times and the pictures and recipes that are the usual fare of this group.  I rarely comment or post but for some folks it seems to be a daily social event. And people are enjoined to stay away from politics or bad language -- unlike a lot of the FB posts I see (and enjoy.) All in all, a pleasant, G-rated sort of place to visit.

Until.  Until one member posted asking if there were any other members of the group who were atheists, agnostics, or unbelievers who would be interested in a FB group for non-religious Appalachian folks.  (There is a lot of JESUS talk in this group and that's never been a problem as far as I know -- folks in Appalachia are probably overwhelmingly Christian by heritage.)

Well, I think this person was just looking for a few like minds to chat with but you would have thought the Devil Incarnate had just posted -- at least according to many of the responses. (It's a big group --  well over a thousand members -- and certainly it was just a small percentage that got so ugly but still, it was kind of terrifying.)

The poster was told to leave the group, that she was going to hell, that she had no business asking such a question, that she was fat, that she had ruined the group for others, that she was an example of SATAN trying to lure away believers,  that this was an example of the 'war on Christians,'  that that believing in JESUS was a criteria for being Appalachian  . . . (all done without any cursing or vulgar language, for what it's worth.)

As I said, it was kind of terrifying. But then other comments began to come in: other non-believers who were interested, some who said they'd been bullied by Christians all their lives, and some who were Christians and pointed out that this virtual lynching was far from Christian behavior . . .

Finally, when emotions were at a fever pitch,  the moderators deleted the whole thread and told people to get off this subject. The next day, one of the most rabid of the negative commenters apologized to everyone on the list -- except to the unfortunate woman who' d dared to suggest that not everyone on the list was a believer.

It was, for me, a vivid demonstration of how many people fear and feel threatened by the unfamiliar. And it was sad, to see so clearly the hatred just below the surface -- and all in the name of The Prince of Peace.  (In the thick of the verbal battle, one woman kept posting "Merry Christmas' over and over, feeling, I'm pretty sure, that she was fighting the good fight in the war against Christians and Christmas and really sticking it to the godless unbeliever who was threatening her (the Merry Christmas woman) own beliefs.)

I'm shaking my head and thinking, it seems to me that if your faith is threatened by someone else's non-belief, you never had much faith to begin with.
