Fun on the Faem

Sunday morning shenanigans. A neighbor let us know that three calves were headed down the road.

By the time we got down there, Justin and Claui and crew had turned them back. Now to get them into their pasture.

In the distance, the mamas were bawling and the calfies scooted back to where they belonged.

The crew: a mama and daughter who spent the night after the party were treated to a mini-roundup.

The whole episode reminded us of far too many Sunday mornings when our beloved late neighbor Mearl would call. "Git ye out of the bed?" she'd cackle. "Cows is out and going down the road."

We used to tell ourselves that she was letting them out, just for the fun of it. And the same thought passed through my mind today.

Was that a ghostly cackle in the wind?

Oh how much this is a country tale! Nothing like this for this city gal...though I now have experienced being on a country road where cows were wandering, and of course we just had to wait for them to go wherever they wanted. Good to practice slowing down in life.

It actually looks like a fun time from this distance.

Almost every Sunday morning when I was a child, we would get a call that the ponies were out and rampaging the neighborhood. Had to round them up, return to pasture, and then still get to church. Mother always thought it was a neighbor letting them out, but after much surveillance, it was the smartest pony opening the gate. Good times!

This happens a lot on the moor road I take to my daughter's. Sometimes sheep, sometimes cattle. The farmers must get regular call-outs.

I take it those are yours. Why is it a Sunday ritual for the calves I wonder?

Yes, our calves

I'd say it's the Law of Natural Perversity.
