We always look forward to the gift of amarylli from Claui's folks. They bring them at Thanksgiving so we can enjoy watching the fat brown bulbs send up multiple shoots.
Nancy finds the most amazing containers.
And this one is guarded by a little Border Collie--just like our Bailey.
Now we wait for the buds to swell and open!

My dad would get an amaryllis to flower again every year. I think his was closer to Easter.
I like amaryllis but can’t have one because I have a cat that likes to nibble on plants. Amaryllis are poisonous to cats, and dogs. This is what I found: “
All part of the amaryllis plant contain toxin alkaloids, such as lycorine, that make cats, and dogs, sick. The bulbs are the most dangerous part because they contain the highest concentration of toxins. In worst cases they bring seizures (kidney failure, etc.) …”. Make sure your amaryllis is out of reach of your furry friends.
I haven't ever been able to keep the bulbs to have again the next year. But oh they are such beautiful flowers and the blooms last a good long time. I've just purchased myself, a bulb which is promised to have two color flowers...waiting now.
