Spring in December...While It Lasts...

What weather! Our doors and windows are open and I'm wearing a short sleeved t-shirt as I organize and put away Christmas wrapping stuff (unlike most years when it occupies my worktable till well into February) and scurry around, ironing Christmas napkins, writing thank you notes, and filing away recipes used recently in hopes I can find them again.

Our quince bushes are blooming like mad, careless of the rumor that colder, more seasonable weather is coming soon.

The budding branches that John cut and I put in vases are opening white in the darker parts of the house and this very delicate shell pink in the south-facing kitchen window (which hasn't gotten any sun to speak of till Sunday.)

What a difference the sun makes -- to all of us.

Hope you don't get hit with the really nasty weather. The quince is lovely!

It’s all wrong, wrong, wrong. I am worried about the damage possible frosts will do to all these early arrivals.

Still, in my less pessimistic moments I admit nature’s optimism.

Happy New Year, Vicki.

Like Friko, I am unsettled by the un-seasonal weather...but like Therese, I will enjoy it for what it is.

Lovely photos...and I never knew the pink came from direct sunshine in Quince blossoms...great to learn new things any time!

Those quince blossoms are lovely. My Mom reported similar blooming has been going on in Virginia. Here in NYC, the temperature dropped about 30 degrees overnight. We will just go over 40 degrees today.

I'm still optimistic about the New Year, although betting it might just be chilly.

Our December spring has ended. First a bit of snow. The freezing rain. Now sun, but a major snowstorm is imminent.

Same here. We have two camellias in full bloom. I have heard there will be extensive damage to plants if we have a hard freeze since they are so full of sap and not dormant. We had one sunny day last week and rain, rain, rain.

We had a warm spell a month ago but today we are snowed in with a snowstorm. It may last a while. I am somewhat jealous of your spring photos but can enjoy them in my easy chair.

Sun does make so much difference. And so do blooming bushes. How lucky you are to have both in December.
