FUBAR

F***ed Up Beyond All Recognition -- a good old military acronym that pretty well describes the state of the US government at this point. I swear, our biddies have more sense than some of the partisan ideologues wasting our time and endangering our future just now.

As one of my friends recently said on Facebook, "Some days you just don't have enough middle fingers."
Here's a suggestion that might help our Congress to focus. I received it as an email yesterday.

(Well, it sounds like a start... but Sally T has just directed my attention to this -  http://www.factcheck.org/2011/03/congressional-reform-act/)   which says that some of this is misinformation.  I checked it out and am reminded I should always fact check such e mails.  Still -- letting your Congresspersons know how you feel about their job performance is always a good idea

My husband suggests that, if the US must default on some debts, the salaries of Congress and their staffs should be paid only after other debts are satisfied.

Proposed Congressional Reform Act of 2011

1.    No Tenure / No Pension.

A  Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when
they are out of office.

2.   Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social  Security.

All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security
system immediately.  All future funds flow into the Social Security
system, and  Congress participates with the American  people.  It may not be
used for any other  purpose.

3.  Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans
do.

4.  Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise.  Congressional
pay will rise by the  lower of CPI or 3%.

5.  Congress loses their current health care system and participates in
the same health care system  as the American people.

6.  Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American
people.

7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective
1/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen.
Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves.   Serving in Congress
is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen
legislators, so ours should serve their term(s),  then go home and back to work.

THIS IS HOW YOU FIX CONGRESS!!!!!

Yes, it's a start, Vicki. I'm going to send a copy of it to my senators and representative, also. Maybe they'll get a clue...

So what is FUBAR?

The suggestions to apply to Congressmen could be taken over, lock stock and barrel, for our MPs, except that they actually do another job as well, and after service, get shoe-horned back into it quite profitably, thank you.

I'm thinking I should be visiting the US while our kiwi dollar is so strong against the US dollar! It hs never been so high in my lifetime. All power to the USA! I believe in you!

Great idea. You think they would let us vote on it? I'm still smiling about the middle fingers thing.

Please check this:

According to FactCheck.org a project of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, this viral email “calls for fixing some abuses and excesses that don’t exist, repeating misinformed claims….”

I agree with you. Personally, I'd like to boot these guys into the Potomac River.

Simple term limitations would probably go a long way to fixing the problem, that, and finding a way to get back to prohibiting special interests from donating to individual campaigns. How about a cap on the amount that can be spent in any election campaign?

And, most important of all, we have to find a way to get the American people energized enough to vote. If more of us had done our duty in the last election, we probably wouldn't be dealing with this problem right now.

This is exactly what we've been saying here in my house. If these guys paychecks were to be put on hold until the situation was resolved, you bet they'd be working night and day to come to a compromise. Great post.

I apologize for posting this email without fact checking -- it came in late and I was in a hurry. Turns out that some (though not all) of the wrongs it addresses have already be fixed or never existed.

I'm still in favor of putting their salaries on hold till all other debts have been paid.

Wonderful rant! I especially like your friend's observation about a shortage of middle fingers. You know, we can fix this in time if we all have the will - just refuse to vote for any incumbent for the next 6 years. That will assure a complete turnover in Congress and the White House. Of course, I'm not overly optimistic about what would replace them! Jim

May it be so!!

I would like a FUBAR t-shirt. That is great :)

Of course, from my admittedly partisan point of view, the Democrats have done far too much compromising while the other side doesn't know the meaning of the word. A plague on both their houses!

And re FUBAR T-shirt, Kristen, Mr. Google reveals several choice.

You have some lovely pullets there Vicki and I adore their little housey. I would say it was too good for the squabbling congressmen at the moment. Please God they sort it out soon!

I love that you used the term "biddies"! When I last used that term it was in first grade just months after we had moved to Tampa from Missouri where we had owned a chicken "farm." I was asked to identify picture drawings of baby chickens for an IQ test and promptly got myself considered for a "special" class for slow learners. You have validated my six year old self! Thank you!!

Vicki Lane said...

KarieB -- That's awful! I thought everyone knew that biddies meant chickens.

I'm in favor of the reinstituting both the stocks and the guillotine...

Seriously, though, it's going to take our PERSONAL COURAGE and ACTION to effect change. We must stand up and be counted beyond "clicktivism," which is only cover for our lack of action.

Oh, and yes...."negotiation" now means give away first and ask questions later...the Dems have taken "negotiations" to a new depth. It's all so horrible I am constantly sputtering!
