In Rugby

I'm in Rugby, Tennessee  -- that charming little Victorian community -- doing a very fast-paced weekend writing workshop.

This is pre-posted with pictures from my visit last year as I don't know if I'll have Internet access...

But I'll be back home tomorrow night and catch up with you all then

I Have Measured Out My Life . . .

In sunrises and snowfalls . . .

In cows and chickens, dogs and cats . . .

In the seasons of farm and family . . .

Rejoicing in nature's bounty . . .

In the beauty of a tree in Spring . . .

Or an old barn filled with tobacco, air-curing . . .

In the geometry of stacked wood for the coming winter. . .

And the brilliance of a quilt for a much-anticipated child . . .

I've been blogging almost daily since December 26th, 2007 and this makes my 2,000th post.  I've talked about the writing life, the books I read, the farm, the garden, critters wild and tame, food and folklore, recipes and rainfall. And I've shared with you photos of all the things that catch my eye, from irises to bubbles on boiling eggs to abandoned school buses and scenes from my (rather limited) travels.

I don't intend to stop.

Thanks to all of you, whether you stop by often or only now and then. These blog friendships  are a delight to me.

But that's another post for another time.   xox, Vicki

The Year in Flowers - A Beautiful Book

The Year in Flowers is a truly beautiful daybook from a gifted artist --
Katy Gilmore of the blog her spirits rose

Katy is an artist with words as well as with watercolor and her observations on the passing months are a pleasure to read.

The illustrations are utterly charming in their simplicity . . .

And, of course, there's room for your own words -- garden notes, journaling, poeticizing, philosophizing -- wherever inspiration leads you.

I've been enjoying Katy's blog for some time now and, having discovered that we share many interests, we've become blog friends, separated by a continent.  Last year, after I'd gone all fan girl about her painting, Katy sent me this lovely book and I've been enjoying it month by month -- such a lovely gift!

I was happy to see, as I thought ahead to some Christmas and birthday gifts, that the book is aailable on line at various places,....

(Disclaimer: this book was a personal gift, not a copy sent in hopes of a review. But I thought some of you fellow flower lovers out there might be interested...)

Jack o' Lantern Mushrooms?

From the road, I caught a glimpse of orange under an apple tree where some of our oyster mushroom logs are and thought that someone had lost an orange tractor hat.

But when I investigated, I found these brilliant fungi ...

I think they are Jack o'Lantern mushrooms -- colonizing the logs  and growing on a piece of hose as well.

So pretty. But not edible. They won't kill you, one website said. But you'll be so sick you'll wish they had.

Okay, then. I'll just enjoy looking.
