Arming Teachers? Really?

It's painful to watch those beholden to the NRA twist and squirm in order to avoid talking gun control. The proposal  to arm teachers ( more gun sales!) is the ultimate in passing the buck
.
As a former teacher, I can say that this idea truly sucks.

I believe it's that magical thinking by many gun owners - the belief that just owning a gun makes one safer. It fails to take into account the amount of money buying weapons and training would cost, as well as who would pay for that; the extraordinary difficulty of trying to get a teacher, a person who is there because they care about children and the future, to shoot someone; the difficulty for police to figure out which person with the gun is actually the bad one, especially if any of the armed teachers are young and black; and the fact that none of us should have to live like that in the first place. It's a completely stupid idea.

It has also occurred to me that, should this become mandatory, it would be a way of self-selecting a teaching force that is overwhelmingly pro-gun and right wing -- the long game?

It's a repugnant idea. No one will want to teach if that's what it comes to. And why would they. Instead of buying their own books for the class library, they'll be buying their own armored vest and bullets. I can't believe what has happened to this country that anyone would even float that idea.

Rather than face and embrace the obvious solution ...

A shocking and hypocritical idea.
