August Is . . .

Dramatic sunrises . . .
A bounty of tomatoes . . .
The sweet-spicy fragrance of gardenias at my door . . .
Clearing away summer's weeds to plant a fall garden. . .

And ending a rainless day with a pale bit of a rainbow.

August, for me, is still just hot. I'm longing for some cooler weather.

Oh, that photo of the gardenia is beautiful. Takes me back to my great-aunt's house in Savannah, GA.

August is almost half way over, and that is SO hard to believe, but I am also anxious for it to be over and, hopefully, cooler weather to move in.

I wish we had smell-a-vision, as Emeril would say, so I could get a whiff of your gardenia. They are my husband's favorite. Looks like I see a Cherokee Purple in the tomato basket. Yum.

I've never had much luck with a fall garden. Any tips, Vicki? I've dozens of cucumbers coming in and think I'll try some ice box pickles this year. Our summer's been fraught with parents' illness, so we haven't had time to take care of the garden as we should.

As August arrives I'm reminded fall is really getting closer! Beautiful tomatoes!

Lordy B....I ended up with 92 jars of tomatoes this year! The tomatoes were about the only thing that did good everything else burned up in the record setting heat. We just got back from a week in the mountains and it felt much cooler there! XO

Really great pics Vicki. Especially the flower and the last one.

August for me is endless hot... but not this year. This week brought an end to the heat wave. Love the photos. I need to start getting up in time to see sunrises again!

Wonderful photos to share your lifestyle...lovely. And I may have forgotten to mention that you had my mouth watering with your earlier post about tomato sandwiches... (drool)

What interesting tomato shapes and varieties you have growing in your lovely garden, Vicki. I'm guessing those are heirloom tomatoes? Your gardenia is glorious. Ours will be coming into bloom in a few weeks' time. At present we have May and Jasmine, ornamental plum blossom and freesias. Your late summer is the end of our winter.

Yes, Sam, that's a Cherokee Purple -- my favorite!

My success has been mixed, Kay. I have row cover over the broccoli and kale, hoping to avoid the worms and bugs that devastated my summer cole crops. And shade cloth over the lettuce as a deterrent to the bunnies that have become far too bold. We'll see.

I'm still canning tomatoes, Carol. My plum tomatoes have about given in to the blight but Justin and Claiui's huge garden is just hitting its stride and they're told me to pick all I want.

Friko -- the photography is my admiring time. . .
