Oh that amazes me. We have no snakes in NZ. Is it soft or scaly to touch Vicki? In Singapore I held a very large snake and was amazed it's skin was like velvet. I always thought they would be cold and scaly.
Fascinating creatures but alas in Australia they are nearly all poisonous so I think I might be just a little concerned were I to find one anywhere in the house!
I think it's a garter snake, Victoria. Lovely shy little things. He didn't seem harmed by I know Hutchins brought him in-- the front door was open and we'd taken the screen door down.
Sorry for those of you who are creeped out by snakes -- I was that way when I was very young but got over it. I do know what a copperhead or a rattler looks like -- the only poisonous snakes in our area -- and I'm cautious around any snake till I'm sure what it is. And you'll notice I'm holding this little creature by its neck so it can't bite me.

You are a brave soul Vicki. My biggest fear living in the south is the snakes. We have them here on the coast of SC. In fact there have been close to 30 snake bites so far this year treated at our hospital. We are in a mobile home on a huge lot of land so I can't even think about what is crawling around under there. Ahhhhh!
MiMau brought in that snake's northern cousin last summer but I didn't find it until shortly after its expiration date had passed. The next houseguest might well be a chipmunk, if Miss Susie is following MiMau's example. MiMau has apparently decided to start stocking the house with wildlife for cold weather playtimes.
Yeah, Kath, that Susie Hutchins has a deep concern for all small critters.
No bravery involved here, Barb and SW Arkie -- there's no way this little guy could hurt me, even if he did bite me.
June -- we've had a chipmunk brought in already -- fortunately unharmed --- and I was able to get he outside too. I really hate fing defunct rodents hidden under throw rugs -- Miss Susie's favorite place.
I've learned to act immediately when I see a snake inside (this is maybe the fourth or fifth in all the years we've been here.) As soon as I'm sure it's not a poisonous one (and that has never happened) I grab it before it can slither away and hide. I'm not afraid of snakes but I really don't like the thought of one living behind the books or under the sofa and roaming around the place. Though if it were a good sized black snake, then we wouldn't have to worry about mice...
Pretty snake. We have lots of those little rat snakes. I find their nests with egg in the straw mulch in my garden all the time in June and July. (I'm calling it a rat snake because the head is brown and not black, could be a garter, which is a live-bearer.

I also had to laugh to myself ... the poor cat is totally stressed in the pictures!
Better that size than the other possibilities! But you'd better raise the rent! With winter coming everything's going to start moving in!

Uh huh. Just like our Nikki brings the chipmunks into the screened porch to keep them safe from coyotes.

When my husband finds a snake in the yard he comes to get me. HE'S inclined to grab the hoe and he knows I'm inclined to yell "OMG DON'T HURT IT".
I'm also the one that dearly LOVES to pick it up and try to get him to make "nice nice" with it.
But one by my laptop? He's getting too pushy at that point.
Well, I'd prefer Miss Susie bring me a little garter snake than a mouse any day. Great photographs of her expression.
