Asheville for Beginners

I found myself downtown last night, with time to kill before my reading at Malaprop's.
I thought of Merisi and the beautiful city pictures she takes.
Of course, her city is Vienna.

But Asheville, too, has its shadows, reflections, and shafts of sunlight.

Asheville ... just a few hours away from where I live. The Biltmore took my breath away - and my youngest daughter (at the time 7) said "I think we should buy this house, it makes me feel like a princess." Enjoy your stay - the weather is beautiful. Oh, an my daughters loved the photo of the baby calf.

Great photos Vicki. Glad you liked the greenstone in my photos. Send me a snail mail address and I'll send you a wee bit of NZ pounamu/greenstone. I'd love to do that.

I really enjoyed this, Vicki. In fact, I've been thinking lately, I should pay a little more attention to the beauty of the city. Perhaps, in some ways, we've been conditioned to equate the built environment with ugliness. Your pictures of Asheville goes a long way to redressing the balance.

One thing I am envious of. Your clean streets!

Asheville looks like a wonderful place Vicki, I was moved to look it up in the big atlas I keep close by. One day I will get to visit, one day.

Every city/town has it's own beauty just some more than others. I was in Asheville once and the area and surrounding scenery is beautiful. Loved the pictures. Thanks.

Great photos Vicki. Merisi's photos of Vienna are really inspiring. I enjoyed the ones you took in Burnsville when you were there too.

This reminds me I need to look up more when I visit cities.

Margaret and Alan, Barb and Brian and Jean -- I live just north of Asheville -- about 45 minutes away. It seems to me the perfect size for a city -- and a very pleasant place to visit. So glad your girls enjoyed the calf pictures!

Joan, you are so sweet. I'd adore to have a bit of NZ greenstone!

Bernie, Marilyn, Martin, and Sam -- I always take my camera along and at first I was looking for trees and was going to go look at some nice roses in front of a church. Then I remembered Merisi's shots of architecture and the more I looked, the more I saw that was worth capturing.

Wonderful photos, Vicki!!!
We love Asheville.
We love the Biltmore, of course, but there's so much more to Asheville - it's wonderful to see some of the architecture that they've taken so much pride in preserving.
We just need to get ourselves there more often than we do.

I like Asheville but do not know it well. The first time we went there we were on our way to Burnsville. We got totally lost in Asheville, it took us at least one hour to find our lodging, a fancy place up a hill (where I had found a special) but I was nice. I liked it there because they placed us in the old wing. The next time we went there was to visit a postcard dealer friend and also return to the Biltmore. I’d like to spend a few days in Asheville – I have heard so much about this city.

Looks like a beautiful city. All cities seem to have their own character. Some just show it more. Asheville looks like it is very special.

Vicki,
you are so kind to mention me, thank you so very much! The images you captured are exquisite, extraordinary the one with the lamp and the building and the shaft of light. Your writer's mind translate very well to photography!
A wonderful weekend to you,
affectionately,
Merisi

Asheville has interesting buildings, as long as you take the photos.
I've just been to the big city, - Birmingham -and felt inspired to take photos of tall buildings. It feels good to get out of the countryside sometimes.

Asheville looks very tidy and clean!

(An oddity: Reading the name, I always want to make Asheville three syllables.)
