Drowning in Tomatoes

Tomatoes on the vine . . .
Tomatoes in buckets and crates . . .
Tomatoes everywhere.
Sixty-three quarts and counting....

You do have a lot of tomatoes! I love the photo of the hand coming out of the jar - you really are drowning in them. I was interested to see the different varieties you have.

That's the problem with tomatoes : you don't see one for ages and then a load of them come along all at once.

Hope this isn't related to the Red Tide! :o}

I am kicking myself for not bringing a basket of those home with me!
Ours played out the 1st week of July and we have to buy tomatoes for salad. :(

We've also had a deluge of tomatoes. I've take some down to the local food pantry when it was clear we weren't going to be able to can or eat them before it was too late.

What a beautiful bumper crop! Wish I lived down the "lane" and could pop in for a few!

I know... I know... it seems like an obsession. But I hate to let them go to waste. Justin and Claui have invited people to come pick but it hardly makes a dent.

I promise not to do another tomato canning post this year.

Oh, that jar of tomatoes looks so good! Do you make juice, also? My Mom used to make tomato juice and tomato juice cocktail. Yum, where they good on a cold winter day.

Oh my---you made me laugh! Love it. However I'm awestruck by that photo of the crop overload still on the vine. My goodness. Very few tomatoes here. Would love to have some of those Cherokee purples I see in the one photo (at least I think that those are purples!). Too bad you don't have a huge flock of chickens to turn into the patch so they might 'harvest' a few of their own.

Maybe I'll pull out the strainer and do a run of juice, Louise, just for the variety.

Tammy -- re chickens. John was heading down to let the chickens out of their house this morning and I reminded him to take the very large bucket of tomato bits from my canning activities yesterday. He said that now when he dumps out the pile of tomato waste, rather than running for it the way they did originally, the biddies just look at it. Oh, they say, tomatoes. Again.

And they start scratching through them, looking for something good like bread or meat.

We have also had a great tomato year. We have made juice and sauce and now I am drying all of them. Much easier and I made some sun dried tomato pesto the other day that I think you can spread on anything and it would taste fabulous. Of course, when making a Bloody Mary...nothing is better than that home canned juice! Makes it all worth the effort. There is nothing in a store that could ever taste as good. I hope you are getting near the end.

Oh my goodness! That is seriously a lot of tomatoes. I used a jar of mine along with some of the homemade V8 juice and it was seriously good stuff!

Good luck!

I can't help but think of Garrison Keillor's story about when Lake Wobegon has their bumper crop of tomatoes; they fill up the house, spill down the stairs. Everyone starts leaving bags of tomatoes on their neighbors doorsteps.

Have you ever tried homemade V-8 (or V-6 or V-9) juice? It's a great way to use lots of tomatoes and it is delicious.

There's nothing better than a sliced tomato and mayonnaise sandwich....or a bacon and tomato sandwich (hold the lettuce)....or just a tomato with salt on it.....or....fried green tomatoes sans the cornmeal please.

Oh, my! I'm tempted to make some tomato juice now. We don't often have Bloody Marys -- just before Christmas or Thanksgiving dinner. But it would be fun to have our own tomato juice on those occasions..

Yes, Helen, I thought of that Garrison Keillor story too. :-)

I only picked those tomatoes, Maria Cecilia -- it was my son and his girlfriend who grew them.

We had BLTs for lunch today-- on ciabatta with homemade mayonnaise. Oh so good!

Yum I only planted two plants and I am also swimming in toms but not nearly as many as you. Reading Art's Blood and loving it!!!!

I hope you have some strong pasta shapes around, zite and the like, to keep you afloat! ;-)

Heh heh, like it. But by the time you've bottled all that lot you surely won't want to see another tomato - or eat one - for a year!

Giggling.... did you really need all those tomatoes? May I suggest the Fish pantry?
