Mr. Vanderbilt's Greenhouse

Thanks to a kind blog friend who sent me tickets, I visited the Biltmore Estate yesterday. I spent my time in the magnificent greenhouse and the adjoining walled garden-- sleeping now but beautiful in its bones.  And I took lots of pictures.

Here are a few -- I'll post more tomorrow.

Everything about the Biltmore House is special, but the greenhouse seems something so gracious and elegant in its structure & completely out of another time. Can you imagine that greenhouse being yours and you could choose to grow anything your heart desired in there. When watching Downtown Abbey, I often think of the Biltmore, especially when the scenes are in the kitchen. A visit to the Biltmore Estate should be mandatory for all visitors to Asheville.

Hope you have a great weekend.

Patterns...you've caught so many from the great structures of the gardens and green houses, as well as the actual plants. Thanks for capturing!

Gorgeous photographs. What a great place to visit during mid-winter. The warmth of the greenhouse and beauty of the flowers make for a wonderful day.

What a treat for a winter visit. It would be especially nice for us. I don't know of any display greenhouses around here.

So beautiful. I had access to the grounds from a friend's house that bordered the estate way back in 1955. We couldn't get too close or we would be told to git. Far different place today.

It does my color-starved eyes good to look at these photos. And to almost feel the humid warmth in the greenhouse. What a great place to visit!
