Yesterday the temps hit 80 -- ten degrees hotter than normal. And it was dry -- but it was time to plant the tomatoes -- about 48 of them -- one tier of San Marzanoa for sauce and another tier of Beefsteaks, Cherokee Purples, Brandywines, Cherry, German Striped, and Yellow Pear.
Tomatoes set out and watered and the first run of baling twine in place (to deter the dogs from running over the little plants.)
And then, though the skies were darkening and thunder was rumbling is the distance, I went on to water the rest of the beds -- too often it looks like rain but doesn't deliver.
Back to the house at 6 to shove a turkey breast in the oven to roast for supper.
Then came the rain -- the glorious rain! John and I sat on the porch, enjoying the sound and smell and lovely coolness.
Such a blessing -- to have the garden really well watered, and to know that the pastures will be growing . . .
Every drop is appreciated. . .
And celebrated'
It went on for a good long time -- and we got over three-quarters of an inch.
And there was a rainbow . . .
It's a fine feeling, to sit in a rocking chair on the porch, sweaty and dirty and tired . . .
And be treated to such a show.

I remember sitting on my grandmother's porch and watching the rain, in western NC. Good times! Now that property belongs to me and I NEVER get to see it. *sigh
Vicki, you picked the perfect time to get those tomatoes started...what a fabulous post you've given us!
xo
Wonderful pics of rain coming down down...I love the one where it's going in 2 directions...a hard job to focus I'm thinking.
What a great post. I can smell the rain, and so envy you sitting in those rockers watching it. And the bonus of a rainbow!
Vicki, that is so beautiful, pictures and words. Somehow rain in the city doesn't have the same sense of freshness but I can 'get it' from your photos. I may have danced in it.
Yeah whooo! we got an inch too- yesterday? So nice to share with you and John
Love the photographs of the rain. We did not get one drop. We didn't plant anything, but the rain might help lower the pollen count.
Wonderful! My favorite thing to do is sit on a patio -- or porch -- while it's raining. LOVE IT. (Even more since living in the desert.) Thank you for the photos; I could imagine I was there. :-)
