Weekend Update Update

Talk about your ivory tower -- when last night I posted words to the effect that it hadn't rained yet, I was upstairs in my workroom with the floor fan going full tilt and producing a bit of a dull roar -- white noise, very useful for concentration.. When I came downstairs just before midnight and said something to my husband about being disappointed there'd been no rain, he looked at me oddly.

"It rained for hours," he said. "Almost three-quarters of an inch."

So the old clothes-on-the-line sacrifice to the rain gods worked at last! And we awoke this morning to more gentle rain -- glorious!

And Tammy and Pat, here's the recipe for Blueberry Buckle, as inherited from my mother.

VIRGINIA LANE'S BLUEBERRY BUCKLE

BATTER

¼ cup butter
½ cup sugar
1 cup flour (sift before measuring)
1 egg
1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
1/3 cup milk

Cream together sugar and butter. Add egg. Beat in well. Sift together dry ingredients and add, alternating with the milk. Pour into greased 8 inch square pan and top with

1 pint blueberries (Mom always used drained canned berries, the little wild ones from Maine, but fresh is good. And Kay Byer's plum-raspberry combo sounds terrific!))

TOPPING

1/3 cup flour
½ cup sugar
½ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ cup butter

Mix together the dry ingredients and chop in the butter as when making pie crust. Sprinkle over berries.

Bake at 375 for 45 minutes. Serve warm with scalded unsweetened heavy cream.

Thanks for the recipe. We have a bumper crop of blueberries coming on this year, which is wonderful after loosing everything last year due to extreme late cold/frost. I will definitely make this mid-week.

We had 1/4" of rain last night and not quite that much so far today ... forecast calls for more today and my fingers are crossed.

Have a very bad summer cold, so did not get on the computer yesterday. I usually check out your blog every day, and I missed it. Love the photos of the baby birds, as well as the story about the towhee. Poor fella.

It rained pretty steady here last night as well, and we're hoping for more...and more...and more. I love to "collect" recipes, and this one sounds great. I will definitely try it. (Do you think frozen blueberries will work?)

Absolutely, frozen berries will work! Hope the cold gets better -- such a miserable feeling

Thanks for the recipe! It sounds very good. I will have to try it sometime. I've never heard of peach pickle, much less seen it in the stores. I'll have to look and see the next time I'm shopping. That is too funny about you being in your own little tower and never realized it rained! :-) One time when we were in drought, it was so hot, and it finally started drizzling. I turned on the air conditioner (which I seldom do) and popped the movie "The River" in the VCR. It's one of my favorites (and has Sissy Spacek in it). By the time the movie was over I was sure we had experienced heavy, heavy rains. But when I went outside it was only a dust settler! ha...
Tammy (p.s.--we have had our share and more of rain this year, so I've steered clear of 'The River'...)
