We Must Tend Our Garden

We had rain and the air is delightfully cool and dry -- a good time to be in the garden. What you see here is asparagus above the wall  and summer squash, peppers, eggplant, broccoli, cauliflower, collards, and three kinds of kale in the box beds.

Sweet corn, in the farthest two rows is coming on; there are little green tomatoes in the two row above the sweet corn; and the pole beans (Purple Royalty) are starting to make. In the foreground is the Glass Gen Indian corn -- remember year before last a friend sent me a few seeds?  I grew about eight plants then, saved the seed, and have quite a few more this year.

Green peppers are almost big enough to pick.

No cucumbers yet but the vines seem healthy. And there are a few beets -- which I grow mainly because I like the leaves in salads.
The basil is flourishing -- I spent a little time trimming off the blooms and weeding around it -- enjoying the quiet of a beautiful day and the clove-like smell of basil in the air

Beautiful garden and bounty coming on. I have corundum for soil on my heath in the woods of these southern highlands, so I have container gardens all about, grabbing the sun wherever I am able. I miss my hands in the Earth's flesh though, kneading and mixing it like I was making bread. Great pictures.

Your garden is beautiful. We have little container herb garden and we replanted the basil three times. It just didn't like our evening showers and hot days. We'll just have to keep buying it fresh at the market.

Your garden is looking very healthy Vicki. Larry informs me that what you call cucumbers, we call courgettes or zuchini. Is he right do you think? I said that courgettes are really baby marrows and they grow quite big if you let them. I have seen both whilst in Tennessee and tasted both and both are delicious.

Nope, Stella, I have to disagree with Larry. I have zucchini (courgettes/marrows) in the first picture in a box bed. My cucumbers are in another box bed, with the marigolds and beets and they are growing up a wire trellis -- a thing that zucchini wouldn't do. I am trying hard to pick my zucchini at the courgette stage but undoubtedly some will escape my eye and grow into great log-like marrows.

All I can say is "it's a dream garden!"
I am just hoping I will manage to have a small one over here...
