From the Farm . . .

Meet Romeo, our new (used) Jersey bull. John and Justin brought him home Sunday.

We were in need of a new bull but the pure bred, mature Devons are so expensive that when this guy, who was something of a blue-light special (due to a slightly deformed jaw caused by a kick from a donkey) came available. we decided to use him for a few years.

The Jersey Girls will have a chance of producing full blood Jerseys and the Devons will have Devon/Jersey crosses -- which should be pretty nice.

I'm told that all the cows were excited by his arrival -- and why not, he's a good looking guy.  John tells me he's sweet-tempered, which is good as dairy bulls have a reputation of being mean. Still, I'm just as glad he's been de-horned.

Thanks to Nancy (one of our tenants) for sending the pictures!  Marigold is looking on with interest. . .

Can't believe you referred to him as used. That's funny!

Romeo and his rugged charm. How can he fail to be a hit with the girls?

How are you feeling now? Much better, I hope.

I'm feeling better -- especially as I just had my meds. They tell me I'll be heading home on Friday or Saturday. I'm still not very mobile -- moving slowly with a walker -- but every day brings progress.

Big smile! It's not like a deformed jaw is going to affect his job performance.... Glad you're making progress with the recovery.

A "used" bull - now that got a smile on a grey and dreary morning! And Marigold looks like she's checking out the new guy in the neighborhood.

I hope the healing is progressing - it must feel very frustratingly slow to you.

Romeo sure is a handsome beefcake! ;) I'm sure that the girls will love him.

In all seriousness, I don't know that I have ever seen Jersey bull before but he sure is a handsome fellow.

Quite the handsome fellow! Boy, what I wouldn't give for regular access to fresh raw milk. (sigh) I have such fond memories of it when I visited my grandparents' farm as a kid. Here in AZ, there is only one little store that carries organic raw milk ... In ME, it was far more plentiful.

What a beautiful “taureau” French for bull (toro in Spanish sounds the same) – I like this word better than bull – it sounds more macho, don’t you think?

He is indeed a fine-looking fellow.

Handsome fella... even with a kicked jaw. Romeo, what a name to live up to! So glad to read you're making progress. Be patient with yourself. And thank goodness we have good meds - keep taking the tablets!

So that's what a Jersey bull looks like! Hefty, isn't he? And handsome!

How many cows do you have? He's going to be busy.

Yay! Glad to hear you will be headed home soon. I'm sure that each 'step' in your recovery is going to have it's difficulty but it sounds like you are on track with your progress. I'm sure it'll be nice to be home. Will you have to go in and have PT on a regular basis or will you be able to do it at home? Romeo is lovely, but do be careful. I wouldn't trust a dairy bull any further than I could throw them. My Uncle finally went to Hereford bulls over his dairy cows (and bought replacement cows), the final straw being the bull that attacked my Aunt and nearly killed her (and their unborn baby.) BUT I'm sure Romeo will be fine. ha...(sorry...I think I'm hyperventilating a little over bad memories..;-)

Oh, he's such a handsome fellow. I'm sure the girls will be swooning. Reminds me of the Dolly Parton song, Romeo. "A cross between a movie star and a hero in a book."

We will be vigilant, Tammy -- we'd always heard that dairy bulls were untrustworthy. John carries an electric cattle prod in case of trouble.
