'Real' Books

Flower by Christopher Beane and Anthony Janson is a real knock out! Beane's spectacular and innovative macro photography took my breath away and has me eager for peony season (and a super macro lens . . . maybe someday.)

High on the Hog is a thoughtful and charming look at African-American cooking and its various influences. It's more than that, of course -- a whole social history emerges  in these pages.

The title comes from the custom of slave owners and later employers giving their servants the lesser bits of the pig - tail, ears, feet -- in return for hard labor at pig-killing time. When eventually the ex-slaves could raise their own pork, they could eat chops, and hams, and best of all, tenderloins -- located high on the hog!
Life, Money, and Illusion is a book I heard about somewhere  (NPR?) and was convinced I needed to read. I'll report on it later. But what a great cover!

I agree, Vicki, greta cover on the last of the three. Life, Money, and Illusion, eh? Sounds like one of those recipes for the perfect existence. I'm probably wrong, though.

What lovely books. Birthday presents? Those flower photos look like Georgia O'Keefe paintings. There's something very archetypal feminine about close-ups of flowers.

The first book looks like a visual feast for the eyes, Yes macro lens, indeed,
so that is where living off the 'fat of the land' and 'high on the hog' came from, we say these cliches and most of the time know not its original origin, love the last book jacket and the small print :living on earth as if we want to stay" intriguing hook to open and read the book.

That last one looks interesting and I will keep a look-out for your review. Is it money that is the illusion or life itself? Let us know.

Interesting looking books, Vicki. I am especially drawn to the second one.

ps: I've just read the previous post and would like to wish you Happy Birthday for Monday! Looks like you had a wonderful time. I have also just received a Kindle. Aren't they wonderful? I am just now getting the hang of it.
Your tulips are gorgeous and must give you a lot of pleasure this week, says I as I look out of the window at the pouring rain.

I'm with you on wanting a super macro lens - and peonies. All three books sound interesting.

The last one, Life, Money and Illusion by Mike Nickerson is well worth a read. MM and I read it out loud, together. Nickerson isn't about shouting. There is no ranting, only thoughtful, serious commentary, offering concrete ideas for preserving the planet. It is both hopeful and ominous. Really gets you thinking!

Wonderful book reviews! Vicki, is the flower one strictly photos? I have been seeking a new portal into contemplative writing and that one may be perfect due to the macro photography . . .

Darla- the flower book is mainly photos -- great big beautiful pictures, with a bit of commentary about the photographer. You can look on Amazon for a peek into the book.

oh my - what wonderful books!!! I'm going to go take a closer look at all three!

(just think of what you'll be able to do with a macro lens!)

Belated Happy Birthday! :-)

Feels so good visiting here, reading up on all I missed.
So beautiful all those books! There ARE times when one is very tempted to not only judge, but BUY a book by its cover. ;-)

Love the fiddlehead picture on top of an earlier post of yours, one of the most beautiful I ever saw. I am nuts about fiddleheads, I even collect fiddlehead spoons.
