And the Winner Is . . .

July 1!!! Ring the bell to call folks in from the fields and stand by for an announcement of the winner -- the lucky one who gets to name a character in my work in process -- Miss Birdie's book The Day of Small Things!

First, maybe a cup of coffee to warm up my hands and loosen up my fingers -- it was marvelously cool last night and this morning. "Sleeping under blankets" as Florida vacationers used to write home in smug postcards to sweaty friends left behind, back in the pre-air conditioning days.
In a carefully and scientifically controlled environment, I reach into the bag, amazingly full of folded post-its. The contents have been thoroughly and blindly mixed about and the moment has come.

I pull out the winning post-it and toss the rest into my paper recycling basket. All those names! I wish I could put all of you in the book. Thanks so much for stopping by the blog and now that you know the way, don't be a stranger, as they say!

What? Oh, yes --- the winner is Susan Bell!!!! (Susan has been a very constant commenter.)

Susan, let me know what name and a few attributes of the character. We'll discuss possibilities.

HURRAY for Susan!!! How cool is that ... will you/she let us know who she chooses or will it be a secret between the two of you???

A cool/refreshing 49 here this morning with a promise of another mild day, a recording setting low tonight and then the heat turns on again.

I'm off to make yet another squash casserole for lunch, with extra going in the freezer.

WOW!! I won something. Cool.

I'll drop you an email, since I don't know if you want me to post my idea here.

I'm so amazed...so happy...thanks Vicki.

I have to add that I just made some serious brownie points with my mother-in-law. The person I chose is my husband's late stepfather. I just called her and she thinks I'm just the neatest person now. (Thanks Vicki.) ;-)

Congratulations, Susan! I'd say, if you want to, go on and post your idea here. Pat's interested and others may be too. And of course things may change in the course of the book.

I'll give y'all a little of the background that I know.

His name was Ronnie Winemiller. I never got to meet him as he passed away a year before I met my husband. I do know that he worked for Gulfstream Aerospace building the cabinets and such in the private jets. (Met lots of celebrities and "famous" people that way.) Restored old cars, was a woodworker...artist if you ask me. I'm told his dad drew the first rendition of Mickey Mouse for Walt Disney. Well, that's just bit and pieces. I never met him, so am getting stuff from the hubby and mom-in-law. He's been gone about 17 years now, and I think my husband still misses him.

Thanks, I'll cogitate on this. He'll likely be someone Birdie encounters briefly who gives her an important piece of information. Give me a physical description, okay?

OK, here ya' go. He was about 6', maybe 6' 1". Blonde hair..mostly white in the photo I've seen, but he insisted it was still blonde. Not real long, maybe just above the collar in back, kept it well "styled." Spent a lot of time on it. Chris thinks he had blue eyes. Not large, but got a small "belly" after he married C's mom. :-) Lines around eyes and mouth, face a bit red from working outside a lot, got redder if he got angry. (Oh, name was George Ronald, but since everyone called him Ronnie, don't think that matters.)
Have to share this so I can tell the mom-in-law I did: She has these old-style cars he made - Model T, Model A..that era. He would find a photo in a book he liked, then make that car from scratch using balsa wood and such. Even made little brass lights, put in windshields, etc. Could look at a photo of one side of the car, and create the whole thing from that.
OK, I'm done. Thanks again Vicki. "Mom" is really getting a kick out of this.

This is great -- I've got a plan . . .
