- They always catch me by surprise -- one day a bunch of tight green buds and then suddenly a glorious explosion of deep pink. And I always think of Martha Stewart and the article in her magazine about her bed of tree peonies that inspired me to acquire one of these magnificent shrubs.
I'd love to have more--but they aren't cheap.
And maybe I wouldn't appreciate this one so much if there were more.
Whatever. But once again I raise a silent toast to Martha S.

Queens of the garden, or is that roses?
Lovely. I wonder if I'll finally have peony blooms this year?
We have one little peony plant, which was on the property when we bought this house more than 30 years ago. For unavoidable reasons, we had to move it, which it didn't like, but it has been blooming in the backyard flower garden for many years. We give it fertilizer and just let it be. It has single flowers, not the flouncy double blossoms that most people prefer.
This is a tree peony, as opposed to a herbaceous pony which blooms later and dies back in winter.
Such a gorgeous colour!
