Bugtussle--A Repost from Ten Years Ago

Bugtussle -- there's one in Alabama. Also Oklahoma, Kentucky, Texas, and Tennessee.

All small towns.

And there were several real bug tussles going on amid the fallen Kieffer pears in our driveway where the fermenting juice led to some drunken buggy brawls.

I'm guessing these black and white fellas are bald-faced hornets.

This solitary butterfly avoiding the boozy crowds is, I think, a Question Mark Anglewing . . .

but what the big yellow guy is, I'm not sure. Possibly the bouncer,

This blue beauty is so tattered that I can't be sure -- Pipevine Swallowtail . . . Spicebush Swallowtail?

The haggard beauty drinking alone at the end of the bar-- she's seen better days.

Go here for some amazing closeups of bees and others.

Quite a party,
or was it Happy Hour at the Bug Pub? ;-)

Would love to see the play, Vicki, alas, .... ;-)

We are enjoying the most gorgeous weather these days, and I managed to sneak away at 4pm to one of Beethoven's summer places and a drive through the Vienna Woods on my way home. For some reason, I had Cades Cove on my mind. Our kids were to small back then to take a hike there. When October rolls around, I start dreaming anew to one day return there and take that hike.

It's a fine time of year to be in NC, that's for sure!

Sorry we will miss the play. My husband is from Asheville and did his undergrad Honors Thesis on Thomas Wolfe. What a fascinating man he was.

Reminds me of the song--"Gotta crawl, gotta crawl, gotta crawl...we're going to the ugly bug ball...' ;-)

Unfortunately,I'm missing the play to. We have previous engagements for both nights. But I was asked to pass on the info.

These bug are too drunk to dance, Tammy. That fermented pear juice is strong stuff!

The drunken bugs remind me of a story by Astrid Lindgren about Emil of Lönneberga: Emile one fine day accidentally almost kills his pet piglet and the chickens on the farm and he himself gets drunk from eating fermented cherries. His mother had asked him to take the cherries to the compost heap, but Michel decides that would be a waste and feeds them to the animals instead. Seeing how fast they gobbled them up, he decided to take part in the feasting too.

I haven't read that one -- but I can see how it could happen!
