It will help the tree to break down faster.
I love dead trees. If they are deep in the woods and not near my house. And lichen and fungus only enhances their beauty as do the various holes made by the woodpeckers looking for bugs. I even like them when part of the limbs or trunk fall off. Gives them more character.
The trees give us so much. Food, shade, warmth, mulch. We are finding out that they do communicate with each other through their root systems.
