Timely Quotes -- Deja Vu All Over Again

Interesting quotes from a book I'm reading -- guess who the book's about.

"In our Nation today, we have still the continuing menace of a comparatively small number of people who honestly believe in their superior right to influence and direct government, and who are unable to see or unwilling to admit that the practices by which they maintain their privileges are harmful to the body politic."

"Are you free if you cannot vote, if you cannot be sure the same justice will be meted out to you as to your neighbor, if you are expected to live on a lower level than your neighbor and work for lower wages, if you are barred from certain places and certain opportunities. . . ."

"The cunning strategy of the plutocrats . . .  was to convince the people that their true interest lay with the interests of big business . . . using 'an ancient strategy' whereby those who would want to exploit or dominate a people 'seek to delude their victims into fighting their battles for them.'"

"Scores of 'Paul Reveres,' mounted on horses with banners reading NO ONE MAN RULE, forayed up Pennsylvania Avenue toward the Capitol to save Congress from tyranny."

So, who was the book about? The Roosevelts, that's who.  Teddy, FDR, and Eleanor.

But the parallels between the times  --  then and now -- are amazing. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

It's a fascinating (though not a quick) read.

Sadly so true. I also think the worst decision the Supreme Court ever made was to consider a corporation a person. I've had to smile at the woman saying "get out of our refrigerators" because big money people want to influence more than just our elections. While some of their views may be good for our health or our country, they still shouldn't be able to persuade voters with their big fat pocketbooks.

Thus it ever has been...remember many of the original US "fathers" didn't want anyone to vote who didn't own land. An opinion, a vote, must be valid from every concerned person of adulthood.

To Sam: Hear! Hear! on that Supreme Court decision.
Oh Vicki . . . I wish I could give you email addresses and have you send this post to some people.

It's depressing, isn't it? This country has always been about, and for, the rich white man.

Vicki, every October, the Supreme Court gets back to work.

And then...on that first November Tuesday, we registered voters are offered some choices of our own.

In anticipation of a late night this November 4, I've already requested a vacation day for November 5. Guess we shall find out who turns up at the polling places across the country.

30,000 part time workers at Wal-Mart had there health insurance dropped. Bill Clinton says things will change in order of preference from Profit shareholder customer employee to customer employee profit shareholder. Gosh when? If you get the first two done right the others follow.
