In the Time of Tomatoes

Oh, yes -- tomato time at last!

Time for a fat slice of a ripe Cherokee Purple between slices of homemade bread slathered with h0memade mayonnaise -- Jane's Krazy Salt and fresh ground black pepper too. . . So good, I ate one for breakfast the other day.

And time to cook up a big pot of tomato sauce -- some for tonight's pizza and some to put in the freezer.

Our Cherokee Purples were ready a couple of weeks ago and we've been stuffing ourselves with lots of tomato sandwiches and BLT's, both with homemade mayonnaise. Tomatoes for me are THE best part of summer.

Is it just me, or have Cherokee Purples only been around for the last 5 or so years? Maybe I just wasn't going to Tailgate markets until then.

Oh Vicki, those tomato sandwiches take me right back to glorious childhood summer lunches.

Thank you! xo

I hope we will have to deal with tomatoes soon. Ours are late this year but there are sure a lot of green ones out there. Your ideas for using tomatoes is great. I had my first tomato sandwich with my grandmother, white soft bread, mayo and fresh sliced tomatoes. Yum.

I'm sure they taste a load better than the supermarket ones. I buy the 'extra special' (ie: expensive) ones and they still have no real taste. But it takes more effort to tend your plot and enjoy the bountiful harvest.

The tomatoes have been absolutely wonderful this summer. And almost anything is improved with fresh tomatoes.

Lovely! The wheel turns again and I am happy to share your tomatoes with you. I know all is well when I see your tomatoes ripening. Of course all is not well in the world but it behoves us to do what we can to 'stay calm and carry on'.

Cherokee Purples have probably been around a long time but they've only recently become popular with small-scale commercial growers.

Jim, I've heard of that combo and it sounds awful to me. But I know lots of folks like it. I like my peanut butter spread on crisp apples --
