The New Car

The insurance came through and we have replaced the poor mangled Honda Fit with a slightly larger Subaru Impreza. It has outstanding consumer ratings, very good mileage, all wheel drive, impressively low environmental impact numbers, and is a pleasure on the road.

Here, in my neck of the woods, Subarus are almost a cliche for us aging back-to-the-land hippies and tree huggers. Now I need to purchase some Birkenstocks . . . .

Good choice, Vicki!

Probably a cliche for good reason!
Will you wear socks with your Birkies? I have to admit that Birkenstocks are starting to look SO COMFORTABLE to my eye!

I am on my second Subaru Forester and don't think I'll ever have anything else. I hit a patch of black ice and rolled the first car two or three times -the car was totaled but all I had was a sore back for a few days needless to say I am a fan. Enjoy your new ride.

I WIN!!! I am such a cliche. We have a Forester, now my husband's paddling car, AND an Outback, which I love. I have worn Birkies for years, have 4 pair, two of which were given to me, almost new. Nice gift as they are pricey. Recently, my husband has bought and wears Birkies too, which has helped with plantars fasciates (sp?) pain tremendously. I DO wear wool socks with my Birkinstocks in the winter. So, I meet every point on the list to be a cliche (or an old hippie).

Of course the caregiver of such a handsome rooster would choose so wisely in a new car!

Oh, Mary Anne -- you win, indeed! I'll bet there's a kayak rack on the Forester... there was a Forester in the dealer showroom with a rack on top and I said to my husband, "That is such an Asheville car..."

I will wear socks with my (someday) Birkenstocks as my feet are too ugly for public view.

Congrats on your new vehicle...it's lovely. Sorry that you had to go through a wreck to get it! Me too aging hippy. The woods are full of us! (Just don't tell the guys in Raleigh.)

You mean you don't already have Birkenstocks???

Vicki, I don't know much about cars these days, but just have a feeling that you've made a wise decision.

I am not sure why I've never owned any Birkenstocks. There are definitely a feature of my own NYC neighborhood. Although years ago I was devote of pretty designer shoes from Italy or France, these days it's mostly Doc Martins, Toms, and LL Bean.

(I do knit my own wool socks.)

Good for you..........I have a Forester (after the Mini Cooper) and love everything about it. No Birkenstocks yet, but I'm weakening! A recent trip to Vermont convinced me that the state is the Subaru capital of the universe, but sounds like NC may be in there too! Glad you have such a good car.

Love the new car! I switched from Birkenstocks to Keens but alas, after buying several pairs I learned they are made in CHINA!!! So it's back to Germany for my Birkenstocks again. (Although I admit, I hope my Keens will last for a long, long, long time. I love them.)

Doc Martins, Frances? "Bovver boots"? Just doesn't sound like you...

I've never owned Birkenstocks -- partially because they were such a cliche (not to mention uglier than homemade sin) but I'm beginning to weaken...

Tevas -- hmmm, definitely outdoorsy paddler guy stuff but I'm not sure they are classic hippie. Of course, not all Subaru folks are old hippies.

I like it! My car is on it's last legs...just waiting for it to conk out before I start looking for a new one.

Vicki, my Doc Martin's are sort of stylized fisherman's sandals in a tortoiseshell shiny leather. Great with those wooly socks in cool weather, packed away now as NYC's heat continues to rise.

Thank you, Frances, for clearing that up! I don't get out much and wasn't aware of Doc Martins as much beyond big stomping boots (skin heads come to mind but that was a long time ago...)

Oooh, I like that! The rooster is gorgeous, too.

After wearing Birkenstocks, winter and summer, all through 1976 to probably '96, I started wearing tidy little laced walking shoes to better suit my NC terrain, much to the relief of my daughter Susan, who actually did go through a phase of Doc Martin's back in her art punk days, and probably still has them. Now I like to wear Danskos to give me a bit of height.
I hope you like your Subie as much as we do ours. We've been driving them since 1988 or so.
Thanks for getting to make me think of shoes!
