Stories To Be Told

Visiting cousins brought with them some of their latest artistic creations: marbleized tiles. I love these little four and a half inch square beauties. Each is so evocative -- just on the edge of telling a story. The first one (above) is either an ocean of fire or the frills of some exotic lizard while this dark scene below is surely the setting for dark revels in Fairyland.

I don't have a story for this one below -- a curtain of some sort?

This next reminds me of sunlight in the ocean shallows.

While the one below instantly made me think of some enchanted underground chamber with an  opening through which one can see the star-filled night sky.

And the last? A firebird flying into the sun?
What do you see? (Of course, rotate any of these and the story could change. . . )

Are those only decorative, or are they functional? They're beautiful!

WOW! Those tiles are incredibly beautiful. When I saw the first one I thought it was a marbelized book end paper made by hand. When I read that they are tiles, my first thought was "Where can I buy some?"

The tiles will eventually be for sale -- as coasters, for use like regular tile -- backsplash, etc. -- once some different finishes have been tested. These are done with acrylic paint and can't be glazed in a kiln like other tiles as the paint wouldn't hold up to the heat. So the cousins are experimenting with polyurethane and other finishes.

I think they'd be nice in little wooden frames and hung on the wall.

I'll let you all know when they reach the marketing stage,

Thanks for answering my question...how they did that with glazes! Acrylics makes good sense...and I've done tiles with frames...they are just right for that!

Marbleizing does make for magical imagery. I've always loved the effect, whether found in old books, on painted walls, or on beautiful sheets of paper in art supply stores.

These tiles certainly do carry on a rich tradition in a new way.

Please do keep us posted about their availability.

#3: figure at the edge of a cliff. Calling, calling. Are you there? Are you there? Is there anyone ... there?

No. 3 is the Snow Queen, dancing in the ice and holding her beautiful gown. It hangs in folds of beauty just like the Aurora Borealis.
Beautiful tiles Vicki. I've never seen any like that before.

These are exquisite and love your perceptions of them... The one you thought of 'curtain' was to me a fairy spreading her cloak of clover, poppies upon the grassy field... This was delightful fun -- thanks!
