My mother used to tell the story that when, back in the spring of '63, I called her from college to tell her that John and I had decided to get married in November or December, she hung up the phone in a bit of a panic, thinking that she'd better start preparing.
For some reason, she decided to begin by moth proofing the closets right away. And, in her agitated state, it wasn't till she had sprayed several closets that she realized it was hair spray, not moth deterrent she was using.
John reminded me of this story yesterday when I began dragging dusty china and glassware out of a storage cabinet in the dining room. It's been unseasonably hot here and, though I should be getting more seeds in the garden, I have a miserable cold which, I tell myself, wouldn't be helped by sweating in the sun.
So I to look for things to do inside. Yesterday and today, when I wasn't blowing my nose, I've been washing seldom/never used china and glass and re-shelving it.
I haven't tried to moth proof anything yet. And Justin and Claui's wedding is probably a year away. But it's kind of fun to think that the same primal urge to Get Things In Order Before the Wedding that grabbed my mother almost fifty years ago seems to have grabbed me.
(These pictures have nothing to do with the post. But what could be more boring than a picture of a closet?)

Pictures of my closets would be scary as heck! When my kids left home, I thought for sure they would take most of their crap with them. They didn't and it's still here where they left it. They just bought new stuff.
get better Vicki!
A most enjoyable story...in spite of your cold. Hope you feel better soon!
Take it easy with that Spring cleaning, Vicki. Colds at this time of year seem to make us feel more miserable, than they do in the depths of Winter.
What is it about southern women and cleaning closets (smile). I've got a lot to do when I get home myself.
Hope your cold improves. Relaxing and putting my feet up works for me. Take it easy. There's always next week.

moth proof...interesting.....hope you feel better vicki
Something about attacking one problem by 'going to work' on a chore of some kind. Love the family story.
LOL! That made me giggle. But, I don't know, do a little neon effect on it, put your Nikon to work on a dramatic angle, and I bet your photos of a closet would be anything but boring! There's your indoor assignment while you recover from your cold. :) Feel better soon.
What indeed. And a wonderful story about your mother, one to go into the growing collection of mother-of-the-bride stories. It's the second least-sane moment of a woman's life; the first is when she becomes a grandmother for the first time. Or maybe these are just evolutionary celebrations?
Hoping that you shed that springtime cold soon, Vicki.
Meanwhile, I think that your posts are not showing any "ill" effects. The post about the two cows was a gem. The iris photos are a collection of beauty, and this closet-centered post is full of insights.

Be prepared -- I believe in that. -- barbara
The next challenge: taking a "not boring" picture of a closet!
Hope you will be feeling much better soon if you haven;t felt already better.
So sorry you have a miserable cold in this miserable weather. Stay inside and take a break from doing anything other than stuff you can do from your recliner, tissues and fluids at hand.
It is so muggy here that my hairline was wet after a few minutes outside. And I don't even have a cold. Take care of yourself.
Depends on what's in the closet, now, doesn't it? Think Fibber McGee and Molly ... --Mario
The story of your mom was so funny; hairspray--oops! Feel better SOON, Vicki...!
Ha ha, indeed. Lovely pictures and a delightful story. What a shame you're feeling poorly when the sun is shining overhead. Here it is cold and rainy. We can't complain because prior to April, we were in a drought situation. Now we have floods. April was an excessively rainy month so I'm sure it won't be long before all the reservoirs are full again.
Get well soon Vicki.
Thanks for the kind wishes -- I'm hoping to feel better tomorrow . . .
Wafarin' Stranger -- and I'm only the mother of the groom -- whose place in the wedding is to "wear beige and shut up" as a friend informed me years ago when our older son married. However, as the wedding will be held here on the farm, I can't help getting a bit involved.
