The Calfie -- with, I hope, Pictures

A few days ago Claui heard a great commotion -- a very young calf bawling in distress -- up in the woods near the barn and she went to see what was up. There was a calfie semi-trapped under some limbs and a gray creature of some sort (maybe a coyote -- Claui didn't get a good look) was on it.
The mystery beast ran off at once and Claui carried the baby down to the milk barn and called John. When John tried to reunite baby and mother, the mother would have none of it. So Claui and Justin have a calfie to raise.

Luckily, there's plenty of milk. . .

There were bite wounds on the little girl's hind legs but they've been treated and are healing. And she took to the bottle right away.

For the time being, she has a stall to herself so they can keep an eye on her wounds and keep her safe.
Ali Ali would like to be friends but after her experience, the baby is wary of his type.

She likes people just fine though-- this lucky unlucky calfie.

Glad calfie made it. There's a U-Tube video out now of a dog in Spain that saved an abandoned new born baby by somehow dragging it over near where her own litter was. The baby was later found and was fine except for some cuts and bruises. Sometimes amazing things happen--important to remember in today's world that they can be wonderful.

That's some story, Lynne!

Calfie is a Devon, not a Jersey, but still a beauty.

This morning she was out and frisking around -- finished her first bottle of milk and then a second. Things are looking good/

Such a heart-warming story. Despite the attack a lot of things went right for this little one.

May I suggest you name the calf Mowgli after Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book - the boy raised by wolves!! (Even though that coyote did not have good intentions)

She is so adorable! I'm so glad that Claui saved her.

I couldn't see the pictures last night, but I thought it was my computer. Thanks Vicki, for re-posting because these are photos that I would have hated to miss.

Glad Claui was able to rescue her. Sounds like maybe the mom cow had already rejected her if she was fair game for the mystery beast. Was your donkey around? Mighty brazen animal to come around with a momma cow, donkey and the dogs in the vicinity, which isn't very comforting..As you say lucky little unlucky calf! She is a pretty little thing. (p.s.--also love the added touch of the fan in the milking scene! priceless. :-) Looks like the cow is enjoying it too...)

We gave the calf to Claui, Liz -- it's her call on the name. Last I heard it might be Cassie.

Tammy, the donkey was in a different pasture -- she had moved herself over with the Jersey cows.

The fan is a touch of genius -- keeps the flies off Marigold and keeps her from kicking at the flies. Milker and milkee are both comfortable.
