Run Free, Ruby . . .

Yesterday was a sad day on the farm.  Ruby, the lovely mare that our tenants brought with them four years back, had to be put down.

It's especially heartbreaking because she looks in such good condition. But Ruby has been being treated for very serious foot problems as long as she's been here -- special vets, x-rays, special farriers and fancy footwear.

At one time she seemed to be improving but recently things took a turn for the worse and she spent most of her time lying down in hr stall, her forefeet too painful to bear her weight

The vet said it was time...

In the days between the decision and the actual event, Nancy and Suzie plied Ruby with all her favorite treats -- she's been on a very restricted diet but now it didn't matter. There were carrots and watermelon and beer.

A bitter sweet time . . .

But the joy in the bond was there and will remain . . .

Run free with the ancestors, Ruby, in the green fields of forever . . .

Oh, Ruby. Yes, run free in the green fields of forever. There's a promise that those feet will no longer be painful.

My condolences and sympathy.

How sad but how meaningful to be able to share some quality time before running free...

That’s always the hard bit about having a much loved animal : the saying goodbye.

It breaks your heart.

My heart is hurting for those who will miss Ruby, and is relieved to know she is held in the hearts of her people who loved her.

Hello Vicki...It's been awhile hasn't it? Thought I'd pop in today and I sure picked a sad post didn't I? Poor Ruby. She was beautiful but I can't stand seeing animals suffer so the right thing was done. She is now free to run through fields of alfalfa and the greenest grass. Hope you are doing well! XX Barb

That's too, too sad. She looks a lovely horse. But yes, she will be galloping free now.
