Composition in Curves and Coils

This handsome black snake (rat snake) was  atop the rock wall behind our house, enjoying the sun.

The bulge in the middle is probably the result of lunching on a chipmunk or two.

Really beautiful, but I'd be scared. We don't have snakes in NZ.

He (or she) is very glossy and healthy looking. You must grow nutritious chipmunks where you live.

The kittehs are fine -- they still haven't been allowed out -- partially we're waiting for them to gain their full size so they'd not be tempting to Brer Snake.

I doubt they would anyway -- he has plenty of rodents around here. Blacksnakes, which aren't poisonous, also eat copperheads, which are. Another good reason to be glad to see them.

Even though I am not a snake fan, I have to admire the beauty of this one. Your comment about the chip monk snack would have greatly pleased my late father, who valiantly waged war with chip monks in his gardens for many years.

What a great natural exterminator you have! Black snakes are probably the best kind to have around a garden or barn. Poisonous snakes give them a wide berth. I envy your setting, but your photos give me enormous vicarious pleasure. Thanks so much.

Blacksnakes...one of nature's beauties and an awesome protector against those snakes that can cause us harm!
