Happy Birthday, USA!

On this Fourth of July, it might be a good thing to take a break, have a seat,
and think about the things that unite us citizens  . . .

It's a kind of depressing exercise . . . love of freedom came to mind and then I realized that one person's freedom is another's anarchy; one person's freedom of religion -- for example, reading the Bible, Koran,  (fill in religious text here)  in school is another person's idea of propaganda; one person's freedom from want is socialism to another . . .
I think I'll go for a walk.

have a good walk Vicki - and a good sit on your porch with a glass of iced tea!

Ironic, isn't it? Any country should be proud to unite under the banners of diversity and tolerance. The sad reality is usually something quite different. Hang on, I'll join you for that walk!

Hi Vicki, I hope your walk proved successful. I have awoken this morning to International news that scientists have discovered an atom that could be the elusive Higgs bosom, this sub atomic particle is suppossed to enhance our understanding of the universe. My first reaction was to question if it would enhance realtions between human kind. You post seemed to me to be on a similar theme. Big hugs, Margie.

Happy Independence Day. Here's to our country where we can take that walk and consider our diversity.

ha, a walk might be more fruitful...hard to think what freedom really means and is that what we celebrate...

Happy Fourth of July, Vicky!

A bit more tolerance and compassion might be good birthday gifts. Nicely wrapped and enjoyed and unwrapped by all. Something along that line ....

Happy Fourth of July to you, Vicki. I do like your idea of taking a walk. I am currently reading The Wind in the Willow (for the first time in my very long life) and am very struck by its wisdom.

A funny chair, but you have to add the stars to rest and think about freedom and tolerance...

Well, sorry not to be more upbeat -- too much critical thinking, perhaps.

Oh, lucky you, Frances! That is a wonderful book -- the picnic basket, Dulce Domum, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, those three things leap to mind. I may have to go get mine for a re-read.

Can I come along on that walk, too, please? Honestly, these days being in nature is more of a balm for my weary spirit than anything I know. And, by the way, my 4th of July post is a bit somber, too. It's hard not to feel that way when you really think about the state of things these days.

Freedom is ok when you want it, but when you get it, it takes on a whole new meaning.
Whilst walking round the Tower of London a couple of years ago, with my American husband, one of the Beefeaters asked if there was anyone there from America. A few brave souls put their hands up in the air. Well, said the Beefeater, 'just think, all this history could still be yours, if...' I smiled.

I trust you realize most of your fans were quietly walking along behind you in spirit like a row of ducklings ... (Quack, quack, waddle waddle ... ) It helps to wander out and see what a beautiful, beautiful country this is, and reflect upon the fact that it has so many truly splendid people dwelling within it. In the end, those who would force such petty squabbles upon us are in the minority, and will fade away when that truth becomes more and more evident.

Happy Fourth, Vicki, and to all here virtually assembled.--Mario

What a lovely thought, Mario!

I think that it's because I'm surrounded, literally and virtually, with such nice caring, intelligent folks, that the wackos out thhere kinda get to me now and then...

We'll just keep walking . . .

Well, a walk in that sunny woodland looks a perfect idea. Happy 4th Vicki!

Regarding the Higgs Bosun particle mentioned by your commenter, someone has tweeted that they're taking bets on some southern US state making it illegal!

I so get this, Vicki. Ron and I spent our holiday walking for hours at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. That's how we celebrated the 4th.
