The past's long shadows
Fall across today and stretch
Beyond tomorrow.
All our yesterdays
Were tomorrows and todays --
Shadows fleeting past.
All tomorrows soon
Turn to yesterdays and all
Pleasant dreams to dust.
But today remains
Sufficient unto our time --
All --no more, no less.

I certainly agree with those words.
Shadows seem to have more significance in cemeteries than anywhere else.
These photographs lend weight to the words, especially in b&w.
Therese in her comment was exactly right : the concept of shadows fits the remembrance of those who have fallen so well.
Lovely reflection. Cathy
Very well said...so true!
and in my country the gravestones all point to the east, so the shadows always point to the west, to the emotions!
Lovely pictures and thoughts here Vicki. Thank you.
Love the black & white shots, makes the shadows so interesting! The loneliness of the shots go so well with your words and the coming of winter. XO
perfect verse for a walk in the graveyard...reminds me of the one by my childhood home....
the words match the pictures... nice!

Words to remember, Vicki. My inner genealogist is especially fond of the idea that "the past's long shadows fall across today and stretch beyond tomorrow." Indeed, they do.
Absolutely wonderful! Those sentiments fit the photos perfectly.
Well done! Jim
I love these photos
Lovely moving words and perfect photographs to accompany them. I will re-visit this post often. It is beautiful.
Such significance of those shadows along with your words. So nice.
@ Star: I am told that graves are oriented so that, when the dead rise on the last day of days, they face east -- and the rising sun.
Ancient Greek temples open to the east, too, save for one rather odd example, that of Apollo at Bassae.
Lovely photographs and words, Vicki.--Mario
Love this blend of images with haiku...
Wonderful way to end a very snarky day. Thank you.
That first image and first 3 lines cast me into a sudden brush with my own mortality. Our time here is so fleeting. I was thinking of that just today while out on a walk, thinking about the growth and death cycles of the plants I pass by... some I walk past year in, and year out, and it seems the seasons pass quicker each year.
Thanks for the kind words -- I rarely choose black and white but these photos just worked do much better that way.
Hello Vicki
Lovely-lovely-lovely!
What more can I say.
Best
Tracy :)
