Here it is . . . the first snow.
I blame those of you who've been putting up your Christmas trees already . . .
But I did toss out my decorative gourds and mini-pumpkins Tuesday morning.
And then the sleet and rain turned to snow which meant . . .
Time to take off the shoes and socks and walk in the first snow --
an old Appalachian charm to to ensure health in the coming year.
Willa just wanted to eat it.

Walking in snow with bare feet? I've never heard that one. The photos are lovely, but you can keep it. My heat isn't working yet and I don't think I can handle it being any colder, without it. Our little cold snap is wearing me out and making my body ache. Love the new AC, but need the heater working! Too bad I can't stop payment on cash. I should have paid when the job was complete.
Walking in the snow with bare feet reminds me of my grandmother, who walked in the dew for the same reason.
No sign of the white stuff here yet, but I think we'll pay for the incredibly mild start we've had to this Winter.
Walk in that snow for me Vicki; I'll need all the help I can get for January, will fill you in soon. Those snow photos are beautiful! Willa looks quite enticed by the snow.
Your photos show such a beautiful world.
Thank you for sharing.
We just had flurries here, none of it laid so there was no walking in the snow for me yet.
What a good Appalachian tradition! Better than eating a raw herring in June in Holland to mark the beginning of the herring season!
nice...we should get ours this week from what i understand...i have walked barefoot in snow...love the magic of the first snow...
Hello Vicki
No snow where I live, but it is soooo cold! If we get snow this year, I may have to give the snow walk a try.
Love all your pictures.
Have a great day!
Best
Tracy :)
Walking barefoot in the first snow to ensure good fortune is new to me. In eastern Kentucky, squirrel hunters would walk barefoot in the snow in order to move more quietly through the woods. But that's the only tradition of walking barefoot in the snow that I had heard to date. Jim
I am going to go walk in the snow barefoot! This is not our first snow...I hope it still works. Beautiful photos.
Gorgeous! Interesting first image...and I love setting the 'charm' by walking barefoot in the snow...my mom grew up in the Ozarks and she never hesitated to step outside barefoot in snow for a few minutes; not sure she knew the charm aspect, but I do come from a long line of hillbillies so maybe she just never mentioned it. ;-)
So beautiful! Looks like Willa is having fun!
I love the way your part of the world looks with that light, powdered-sugar dusting over everything. Snow is a rare event here in Louisiana, but if it happens again in my lifetime, you can bet I'll kick off my shoes and take a few steps in it.
Beautiful snowy pictures Vicki. We haven't had snow yet in Knoxville, although tonight it will be very cold.
You hardly need to decorate a tree do you? You have such beauty all around you.
So lovely! Thank you.
You are a much better sport than I am. I looked out at the deck and snuggled further down in the bed and pulled the covers over my head, hoping it was a dream. It wasn't.
And here we are, winter.
It's the first day of December, after what appears to be the driest November in over a hundred years here. No rain, no snow, yet fog in abundance. I always associated fogs with wet years, but there we go, fog could not care less. Simply shows up and blankets everything from on high down.
Oh my, I remember this! I'd never heard of this tradition before (the walking in snow with bare feet) and was just charmed to pieces when I read it here last year. Wow, I've been reading your blog for a year? Time flies! Beautiful photos of the first snow.
Brrrr- not ready for snow yet! Gorgeous pics Vicki!
