Ethan

We awoke to a beautiful snow yesterday morning. Then things went downhill.

Our older son collapsed briefly after a morning walk and his wife called 911. It was a long day waiting in various waiting rooms and this morning he is in the hospital in Asheville -- alert and feeling pretty good except for the knowledge that the blood clots in his lungs and the one in his leg are potentially life-threatening.

They've got him on a blood thinner and will keep him there a few days. I have a lot of confidence in the care he's receiving and am thankful that he's in the hospital where they can monitor him.

I mention this in case I am slow responding or don't post for a few days.

Please hold Ethan and our daughter-in-law Aileen in your hearts.

Vicki, I am so saddened by this news.I am a firm believer in prayer and I have and will continue to pray for Ethan's complete recovery.
This is very serious and I thank God for excellent Doctor's and medical care in this day and age.
My thoughts are truly with your family.

Vicki, I'm with you in spirit---this is a lovely, yet treacherous time for family, isn't it? I am glad that Ethan is getting the care he needs and I'm sure he'll be home soon. And I hope he lets everybody else do the Christmas shopping, etc., etc. and just takes it easy recuperating.

Good thoughts are being sent your way. Just a note: a friend of mine recently went through a bout with blood clots as a result of poor medical advice after an injury. She is doing well with regular exercise as a rule now. I'm with Carol though; for the most part, we have such excellent doctors now-a-days. Medical science is an amazing thing to me.

Thanks for the kind words, thoughts, prayers . . . This is the truly awful part of having children.

Here's Aileen's recipe for Kay who requested it.

Cinnamon Ice Cream:

2c Whipping Cream
2c Half and Half
1c Sugar
1+1/2 tsps Vanilla Extract
1/2 tsp Cinnamon (although I use a lot more than that, maybe as much as a tablespoon, so I would say, cinnamon to taste)
Dash salt

Combine all ingredients. Cover, refrigerate 30 minutes. Freeze as directed for your ice cream freezer. Makes about 2 quarts.

Vicki - Glad to hear Ethan is safe and resting in the hospital. I have a young niece who had a similar experience (she had been on a very long car drive and that's how the clots developed). The blood thinners are miraculous and I'm sure he will be better in no time. You are in our thoughts. ~Liz

Vicki, my thoughts and prayers are with Ethan. He will get excellent care at the hospital but as parents, we do feel so helpless when our children are at risk - no matter how old they are. I'll be thinking of you.

Vicki, thanks for thinking of my request at this difficult time! Yes, the truly awful part of having children. the terror that comes with serious illness. Or just looking around and realizing one of them has vanished, where? The creek just below, the road just a bit farther? This happened when our daughter was only about 3. Where was she? In her closet quietly playing where I couldn't see her and of course she couldn't hear me because I was outside screaming for her hysterically. When I rushed inside, beside myself, I scared her so much that she started screaming and crying, too. We terrified each other.
I wonder if that mutual terror is at the heart of parenthood. And life? But back to cinnamon, like you I always add more. To everything that calls for it.
Add to Taste. Is that the title of a book? If not, let's write it.

Vicki, just wanted you to know that you and yours are in my thoughts and prayers. I'm with everyone on the excellent Dr's and medical care nowadays and I also think Mission Hospital is one of the best.

Ethan and the whole family are in my prayers. Both my father and my husband had blood clots and both are doing well years after it happened. I trust the same will hold true for Ethan. Still...it is scary. May he do better every day and be home very soon.

Hi Vicki,
Just catching up after a couple days. I'm very sorry to hear about Ethan. Do they know what caused this? You and Ethan and the entire family will be in my prayers, as I know it is so hard to watch a loved one go through something like this.
Take care,
Tammy
